I personally do not care as long as someone else's beliefs do not cause harm onto me or those I care about, but I believe there are clear reasons why so many people do care. In some religions zealotry can even lead to violence.
The reason many people care so much about religion is that they have been taught that their religion is the only correct one, and that these views absolutely must be spread. This is clear when we observe the actions of Christian evangelists, Islamic "freedom fighters," etc who do their best to spread the word of their God and their religion. I don't judge these people as right or wrong in any way, but I do believe their motivations are to find more followers in their faith. This concept makes a lot of sense to me. When someone really believes in something, they want others to believe it too. Unfortunately, many people cannot tolerate fierce resistance to their goals. Such intolerance has repeated itself millions of times over throughout history. The Crusades come to mind, as well as the ages of wars in the Middle East, and even religious battles within countries like France and India.
Additionally, because no one knows the meaning of life, many people find comfort and guidance in the form of religion. Within this group of people (which is definitely a majority of the world's population), a good number believe they will find meaning in bringing others into the fold of their religion. They think it will save others as it saved them. This concept creates a "me over you" situation when people do not want to conform. Obviously this is not universal, and in the US religion can be far less militant, but overall I think that a lot of animosity arises from a difference of opinion on this most major set of beliefs.
I think that in a lot of the world people do not have the luxury of accepting others' beliefs and living happily. The world has a lot of strife, and sometimes this bad energy is concentrated in religious issues, when really, people should work on economics or politics or something else in general. Keep in mind, people aren't always logical! Sometimes we focus on the wrong things.
As an end note: We should try as hard as we can not to blame individuals who become violent for their religious beliefs. Sometimes people are victims to a higher operation. For example, madrasas are Islamic schools that feed the impoverished and provide them with an education and religion. Unfortunately for peace, a number of these disciples become "freedom fighters," killing others to spread their beliefs. But what would you do if you were a young child with no hope for a future? I would sign myself right up to go to that school.
Ps- these are all just theories. I'm still in high school :)

Does mattering mean that much to you? You'll be dead. We don't know what the point is, maybe there is one maybe there isn't. Whatever the case may be, I can assure you that we as humans are not even close to being smart enough to understand it if there was one. It's like comparing an amoeba with Einstein. This is what makes religion ridiculous. The audacity to think that ancient man 2010 years ago was able to summarize the marvels of the universe through the invention of god just blows my mind.

Who really cares about what you believe are the people who love the truth. Have you ever read about the wisdom of Solomon and how two women came for him to judge between them. One had laid on her baby while sleeping and had killed it and had taken the other woman's live baby and laid her dead baby where the live baby had lain. Solomon said take the live child and cut it in half and give each woman part of the baby. The mother of the dead baby said yes, that's what should happen, but the mother of the live baby said no, do not kill the baby but let the other woman take him. The point is, everyone who loves the truth will care what others believe but those who don't love the truth won't care if the truth is mangled into unrecognizable chunks and spread out amongst all the religions or not.

I agree with you. But i don't fight with people over religion. I answer questions that are making statements about my religion that are wrong. I'm certainly not out to convert others or make people believe what i believe. I do live in peace, respect my neighbors whatever there religion or lack of. At the end of the day God cares in the grand scheme of things and he cares what you believe. But i agree each to his own, live and let live.
P.S I am Muslim.

Apparently, all the people fighting about it care. While I agree the argumentative nature of most of the Answers is unproductive. Some people do ask honest questions and are looking for honest answers. With any luck, they'll find them someplace in the mix.

I agree!
We could agree to debate a point about a belief system and choose to use respect while debating it.
In the Grand Scheme....I don't think any of us really knows for sure. I think we all have an equal chance at whatever form of Heaven or "Life after Death" exists.
Peace!

It will matter at the end of this world when we go to spend eternity in either heaven or hell. Believe me, it will matter to you then.
Until then, God put me here for a purpose. That purpose is to spread the word about Him. And I will do this for as long as I live so it will not be my fault for failing to tell anyone.
Acts 1:8
"You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

That is your personal relationship between you and your God. It should matter more for yourself then to go out and try to prove anything to the world. If I am asked what I believe I will share it, but as far as to fight over it, no. We all have to make up our own mind about what we want for our life.

There is no reason to get into big arguments over it and most who are secure in their beliefs or disbeliefs don't. In the end it boils down to you and God, the only thing other people have to be concerned with is if you are living up to your obligation to your fellow man.

I fight over it because I want to see them in heaven, to show them the truth and the love of Christ. I want them to live the way God wants them to live. If the man leads a sinful life and rejects God, he won't go to heaven, and who will be there to say that they had atleast tried? I don't want to stand before the judgement throne and have God ask me why I didn't try to save them.
