Right now, we have a volunteer military - and if you volunteered, you could be sent to a combat zone.

Yes, if you join the military, you can and will be sent to war, despite being the last person to bear a family name.

It seems like you might be confusing that with a "sole survivor" designation. If you are the sole surviving son or daughter of a family as the result of death in combat, death by disease in a combat zone, or if your only remaining sibling is 100% disabled and requires continual hospitalization as a result of combat, you are designated a sole survivor. As a sole survivor, you have the option to request in writing either a administrative discharge or assignment to non-combat zone duty, if you wish.

You know what toots, how about if we just say that the last male in a family to bare the name cannot join the military? Would that make you happy?

My only question is: Why did he enlist? It is on a volunteer basis to enlist. The military trains day-in and out for war especially in these times. So now that it is deployment time- he has to go. He signed up for it. I know it is hard. But HE decided it- No one else.

That was an exemption during the draft years. It no longer applies as the military is all volunteer. Even in the days of the draft the exemption had to be applied for it wasn't automatic. Another exemption is if you are the sole provider of your family and again that was during the draft only.

Your not supposed to. But from what I understand it does happen. My brother was sent over and it's just him and me. My mom called the red cross all the time about it until his time was up. We were so scared for him.

As in sole surviving son. I do not think so unless it is the choice of the individual, but I am not an expert on the subject.
