There are I believe a bunch of people credited with this line. Does anyone know who said it first?

I reckon it's the same bloke that said:
"A woman drove me to drink and I didn't even have the decency to thank her."

W.C. Fields

"Well, a man’s got to believe something, and I believe I’ll have another drink,” is a line in Peter de Vries’s book, The Vale of Laughter (1967). The saying is often given as: “Everyone should believe in something. I believe I’ll have another drink.” Sometimes the drink is specified, such as “I believe I’ll have another beer” or “I believe I’ll have another cup of coffee.”

The quotation is often credited to comic actor W. C. Fields (1880-1946). but there is no evidence that Fields had ever said it.
