Do you think atheists ignore the fact that religion is extremely beneficial to society?

Those who emphasize the good effects of religion never seem to realize that such effects fail to demonstrate the truth of any religious doctrine. This is why we have terms such as "wishful thinking" and "self-deception." There is a profound distinction between a consoling delusion and the truth.

In any case, the good effects of religion can surely be disputed. In most cases, it seems that religion gives people bad reasons to behave well, when good reasons are actually available. Ask yourself, which is more moral, helping the poor out of concern for their suffering, or doing so because you think the creator of the universe wants you to do it, will reward you for doing it or will punish you for not doing it

I see no reason for "religion" to be of any significant benefit to society....other than the benefits that it allows those who choose to belong to a group of like minded people.

People find solace in a group environment. It takes strength of self and a solid foundation of experience to learn to stand on your own.

Not everyone can conquer the fear of death alone. Not everyone can find peace of mind without religion. Right or wrong.....they do what they do within the structure of religion and it serves their current purpose.

Troubled Troll.....we can not prevent the religions of the world from existing, we can only live our own lives and enjoy the debate.

I am not an atheist, but I do not think atheists ignore the benefits of religion.

Peace!

Well, it's just like little children being asked to help by their parents. At first they will do it just because they are told to do so, but then they reach an age where they just want to help, and if they have noble spirits they will hopefully develop into a compassionate human being who would instinctively help others. It's not bad to want to be like Jesus Christ and serve often and willingly. After all, younger siblings look up to older siblings and model what they do. At some point in time, the virtue of love, service, and sacrifice becomes internalized.

Think of this story:

A Lord owns a large Land. And has upon it, many people living there.

One day, the Lord decides to leave on a journey and doesn t tell anyone when He will return. Nor does He leave any single One in charge , for they are All his son's and daughter's.

Time goes by, and some of the people begin to worry, so much that they even fear that if they do not do certain things, then when there Father returns, He will be angery at those who did not do as these worried few did, and punish them.

So , these few whom are worried, act as leaders and begin to tell others there beliefs. And some follow them, and do as they say. Yet other s do not, not fearing, for they already have Faith in how much there Father Loves them.

Then, the Leaders and there follower s , throw out as many people as they can, out of the Land, whom does Not follow them.

One day, there Father returns, and notices that some of His children are missing. He questions people, and finds out what happened. Then, he brings forth those leaders and asks them Why they did what they did?

The leaders answer ," We did this for You."

With that, there Father gets VERY angery, and replies," You did NOTHING for ME ! YOU have thrown out MY children , into Darkness. And what 's worse is you did so using MY NAME !! For this you shall receive the same punishment you gave them."

And so , the Father throws out all the leaders and ALL there followers, out of His Land and Into Darkness.

Woe to those whom lose the children of God, For They Shall see Hell.

Your question is a bit hypocritical don't you think? You say it is beneficial and then say it is not...which is it? Morals come from religion period...whether you like it or not you cannot show a single society that has any moral values that did not get them from religion.......so darling....can you show me one? A society that has advanced without some sort of religion being involved? Some of us believe the knowledge from birth of right and wrong comes from God.....to me a person who is good from birth, kind and considerate...is in itself proof of Gods existance.....

God will not "punish" you for NOT doing good. That's "religious " nonsense.
Where did you get this "moral compass" which concerns itself with the well-being of others? From within your OWN goodness? "For there is NONE righteous, NO NOT ONE.."

Again I say..Isa 14:12 ¶ How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Isa 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Isa 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

I will grant that at one point religion probably helped to form cohesive tribal units.

But humanity has out grown it.
