all you need is a floor jack. start by disconnecting batt. remove wiring from alternator, carb.oil press.switch. remove accel.cable from carb. remove splash guard around engine pully.jack up car, place jack stands. place jack under engine. from under car remove heater hoses and heater cables..gas line and plug it to prevent gas spill.remove 4 each 17mm or 11/16 size . after all bolts have been removed, grab tail pipes and slide engine away from trans. lower and remove.

You don't lift out. You drop down. So put the rear wheels(better if you can do all 4 up on blocks and keep the car level) Remove accelerator line, fuel line, coil wires(little ones). You have to crawl under neath the car and you are gonna remove the 2 or 3 large bolts that connect the engine to the transmission(there are 4 of them) >its been awhile since I did this so doin from memory) The last one is a nut on the passenger side behind the dog house (fan housing). You can just slide your hand down there with an open ended wrench 19mm??.

Make sure that you have a floor jack or tranny jack with wheels under the motor at this time holding it up.

Also you need to remove the metal sheeting on the engine floor in the engine compartment with flat blade screwdriver on the screws. Take it out. The fan belt may have to come off too as it is a tight fit.
If you have 2 strong guys they can grab the intake manifold on each side and slide the engine towards the rear holding it up as you have to clear the transmission shaft. If the engine is brought right to the rear it will do just that. and then they can set the engine down onto the ground. Really best if you can find somebody who has done it or a book from the library. Pics help. It is easy. And why I have the vehicle level is because if you use a floor jack it will move the motor horizontally.(which would not be the case if only the rear wheels were in the air.

the car body itself may have to be raised some more to get the engine out completely because of the doghouse. but that's it.

The answer above by Joe is textbook perfect. A few extra things I learned..(mostly the hard way)

Always RE-check for cables before yanking on those mufflers. Seems like you always miss one. The gas cable is my common oversight. Cables break a lot easier then they replace.

The engine will slide out from under the VW if your jack lowers enough.. if not an old tire works really well.. just work it off the jack on to the tire. Having a second jack to raise the body 'just a bit more' is also handy. USE JACK STANDS for the body.

Watch out for the oil filter nuts and the jack head.

Two people and 30 to 45 minutes should be all that you need - even the first time.

CLEAN THE ENGINE BEFORE YOU START PULL IT. If the car drives take it down to a coin operated car wash and use engine degreaser and the pressure wand. Get as much cr*p off the engine (top, bottom, sides, air ducts, etc...) as possible otherwise it is almost certain to end up on your hands, hair, clothes etc.. and its a lot easier to see that wire you overlooked (grin)

Always check your clutch, rear seal and throw out bearing before you reinstall the engine. Cheap insurance to replace them if they even LOOK worn.

Off the top of my head those are the 'optional extras' that will save you some un necessary grief... maybe someone else has more suggestions????

Four bolts behind the transmission and it's light enough for a floor jack to lift it.
