I just adopted a 1 and a half year old Beagle. What can you either current or former Beagle owners tell me about the breed and your experience with it?

I rescued a senior beagle two and a half years ago. He is a nose on legs. I would highly recommend:

1) Keep your beagle indoors so that you don't have to deal with fence escape issues everytime a neighbor tosses some meat on the grill or opens a window to cool a pie.

2) Find a place in your kitchen to put your trashcan behind a closed door or babylocked cabinet so that your beagle doesn't make messes and risk ingesting dangerous garbage.

3) Same with the dogfood bag. The only thing it seems beagles have inside 'em besides the nose stuff is a giant stomach that is never, ever full.

4) Keep your beagle leashed when outdoors. Once a beagle picks up a scent, he could go for miles.

5) Get used to being followed around. Beagles were bred to hunt in packs and are very social. As pets, that means they are very affectionate and like to be with you all the time. Close your bathroom door securely if you don't like to be chaperoned while you pee or bathe!

Good luck with your new baby. If your experience is like mine, your life should be full of laughter and affection with a beagle in your life. Well, and barking too. Lots and lots of really loud barking. ;)

We have had several beagles, they LOVE kids normally. Protective of their kids, and easy to spoil, the only bad thing is they bark so much we tried the collars that shock them when they bark and they would wear out the batteries in one day so if you or your neighbors can put up with the barking they are great loveable and sturdy dogs. My last one lived for 16 years until I had to put her down she was extremely spoiled all my fault. She was abused before we got her. Love the beagle.

Need to probably keep it in pen. Beagles love to hunt all over the neighborhood, woods, town, anywhere. And they love to bark. There bark is kind of annoying but funny. Especially if they have a scent of something. Very sweet natured dogs. If you are going to hunt with this dog my dad always told us not to be petting his beagles because when he got in the woods he wanted them hunting not over there trying to get loved on from him. You'll enjoy it!
