I'm all for brushing with baking soda, but I have to object to rinsing with drugstore disinfectant. I don't mean to be the party pooper here, but if folks are using hydrogen peroxide out of the drug store bottle, it's not strong enough to whiten your teeth, and it may damage your gums over time. Over the counter hydrogen peroxide cannot whiten teeth in mouthwash or toothpaste form because it's not left on the teeth long enough or strong enough. Bleaching effectiveness is all about
1) high concentration,
2) good isolation, and
3) long duration.
That's why dentists use dental dams, custom trays, or light cured gels to deliver high strength bleach-- to protect gums from the bleach, and to prevent the saliva from washing the peroxide gel away before it's done its magic. It's also why White Strips typically outperform paint-on gels and whitening pastes - strong ingredients, a plastic strip that prevents saliva wash-off, and a long recommended wear time.
The only homebrew whitening solution I can think of is made with a certain sodium compound (not baking soda or table salt) combined with hydrogen peroxide solution. This would make an industrial strength whitening paste; dentists used to use it on the most stubborn dead teeth (that have had root canal treatments). In the office, we use strict tissue isolation and dental dams to prevent collateral damage. In untrained hands, such a paste will quickly burn through any soft body part it comes in contact with. That includes, but is not limited to, your eyes, cheek, face, fingers, tongue and gums. Did I mention that it permanent ruins clothing on contact? If you applied it to a normal tooth, it would quickly feel like a hot nail stabbing you in the jaw. DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.
Fortunately, you cannot buy either of these ingredients in strong enough concentrations without a dental license. And if you buy these two ingredients in commercial strength, you're already waaaayy past the price of a trip to the dentist to do it correctly, comfortably, and safely. Actually, most dentists, don't even use this homebrew solution any more. DON'T DO IT.
If you want whiter teeth on a budget, just go get some Whitestrips for $30 at Walmart or Target. They're predictable, effective and comfortable for people with relatively straight teeth. It's a lot cheaper than a trip to the burn ward, and a lot faster than using first aid disinfectant as a mouthwash. Stick to Listerine, please.

Yep, Hydrogen Peroxide and baking soda.
You can get these in any grocery store.
Hydrogen Peroxide kills bacteria (most bacteria resides on your tongue and creates bad breath). Baking soda is great for cleaning teeth. Together, they work very well as a whitener.
Try not to swallow too much peroxide though. It won't kill you, but it's better to spit all of it out after you finish.
btw, Peroxide alone is a great way to get rid of bad breath immediately. Swirl it in your mouth for 20-30 seconds, then spit it out. It can be used at any time to kill bacteria on your teeth, gums, and tongue. Then when you have timeto brush, use baking soda.
Also, buy an electric toothbrush ! Huge difference.

You can get hydrogen peroxide from any pharmacy and probably even a grocery store. Mix it with the baking soda to make a paste and then brush, but not too hard because the soda is a little bit abrasive. It works good though!

I personally use Hydrogen Peroxide to gargle with. It is a very good teeth whitener and cleaner. I use it before I brush. Just DO NOT SWALLOW EITHER.

I asked my dentist about that and she says it works. But it works because it slowly breaks away at the surface of your teeth, so that's why they get whiter
