Try a groomer for a few visits, once the dog is used to being groomed (by the groomer) it might be easier and more willing for you to do at home ... keep an eye out for a grooming table that you could have at home (all the right tools make the job easier)
Note: I have to ask ... why did someone give me a thumbs down for my reply (which I've tried, and it works), yet another person got got a thumbs up for his rude reply?
To clarify, The reason I say try a groomer for a few visits, is because 1) if you only need a bath and brush out, once the dog is used to standing still after a few sessions at the groomer, you may find it works out nicely at home 2) it can even become nice bonding time 3) Some dogs are terrified of going to the groomer. Also, many groomers often want you to leave your dog for hours where they are in a small cage w/ unfamiliar sounds, etc ... I currently have a good groomer, but I've also had some very bad experiences w/ groomers.

I had a collie that loved to be brushed so much, all I had to do was stand up and hold up his brush and he would trot right over with his tail wagging in anticipation. He certainly did not start this way! As a pup he would bite at the brush and wiggle around and try to run off. This is what I did to get him to love being brushed:
Firstly, I put his collar and leash on, which told him it was a working time. I was already training him puppy things in the backyard, so he knew when I had his collar and leash on, it was not play time.
Then I would brush him, for short periods of time at first, then longer and longer times. As I brushed him, I patted him, and told him what a beautiful dog he was and how much I loved him. I petted him and made alot of loving remarks to him and made it a very loving experience for him.
After I was done brushing him, I would take off his collar and leash and he got a milk bone as a treat the first few times. I did not have to keep giving him treats after a few times.
Main thing is this; I turned this chore into a loving experience for the dog, and it also was no longer a chore for me but a very loving and relaxing time. We bonded even closer by this experience. I had absolutely no behavior problems from him after I started doing this with him.

I would take the dog to a professional groomer. I had trouble shaving the clumps off of my cat. Finally I gave up and took her to a groomer and they did an awesome job.

Open your wallet and pay a groomer to handle the job correctly. Your dog will thank you.

do not reward him for trying to escape and dont sneak up on him either- it could scare him
you may need to have someone help you out and hold the dog on a leash so they can't get far if they escape from your clutches.
force the dog in a submissive position (on their back- and it looks like they want you to rub their stomach). once you have him calmed down and allows you to put him in the submissive postion slowly brush him. if he behaves- reward him with petting/scratching- not food

Certainly a professional will be able to do it, unless your dog is completely psycho.
If you want to do it yourself, just do it. Tie him to something so he can't run away. If he learns that he's going to get groomed no matter what, he will learn to accept it. He doesn't have to like it.
