Lint brushes work ok. The most effective I have found is just vacuuming the couch (putting the vacuum on the couch, not using the attachment). They also sell special sponges at pet stores they really do work fantastically - you rub them down the couch and the fur rolls into removeable clumps underneath it. I imagine just a slightly damp regular spone might work in a pinch, but the ones you buy are very dense and that probably makes some difference.

You can use a damp cloth and wipe down the couch, this will move all of the hairs together and you can then pick them off, also a sticky roller that you use for lint will pick up hairs.
Then try putting down plastic on the couch when you are not there, when the cat jumps up the plastic will scare him and he will stop getting on the couch all together.
GL with this, it is hard to teach cats not to jump up but it can be done, and don't let him sit next to you on the couch if you want to teach him to stay off... M

Use the sticky tape type of lint rollers. You can purchase large refills at the drug store. Works great and gets all the fur off. Don't skimp on the sheets, use as many as you need. Once you remove all the fur a quick vac or "beating" removes any left over dirt.

USE (best to least working):
cover with a slip-cover or sheet,
clean with a heavy-suction vacuum cleaner,
a lint brush or roller,
a big piece of packing tape sticky side up over the couch or
a damp lint-free rag.
Good luck!

I use a damp cloth. The cat hair tend to stick my furniture. The damp rag rolls the cat hair into clumps that I either vacuum off or pick off by hand and toss.

I wrap duct tape around my hand, sticky side outward. Works like a charm. But you do have to change it often. Then I vacuum and brush the cat outside.

I use a lint roller and/or a brush that I found that is rubber... it collects the hair and crumbs...and takes the static out.
