The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

If it's caused by a cold, then tincture of time (usually 3-5 days) is all that will heal it. You can reduce the symptomology by using chloraseptic spray for your throat, and the standard decongestants and antihistamines for your nasal symptoms.
If you don't experience considerable relief within 5 days, then you should really see a doctor. You could also be checking your temp, as well.

Get a good humidifier, some tea and honey (put the honey in the tea...lol), and chicken soup wouldn't hurt either. The humidifier helps to keep your nasal passages open (it's better to have a runny nose then a stuffy one) and it also helps to keep your throat moist, if your nasal passages and throat are dry it can make you feel worse. The honey is good for your throat, tea has healing qualities, warm liquids is good for the throat, and chicken soup has been proven to have healing qualities because of the sodium it contains, and the subconcious thoughts of comfort that is attatched to it.

I had a bad cold once and I drank and drank green tea and it was gone in 24 hours. I know that if you like hot stuff or maybe if you are just brave, you could take water, a little Cheyenne, honey and pressed garlic and mix them together. Bottoms up! Do this hot mix and take it about three times a day. And no, Cheyenne does not hurt your stomach. It just burns coming out the other end just as it burned going in. Its good to stop a heart attack also. I know of a friend that used it on her husband.

i actually just had this last weak. the best way is just to get more sleep ,relax ,drink plenty of fluids, keep your hands washed when you blow your nose. i took a decongestant to make me feel better temporarily. but usually your sympotoms will only last about a week. you can try nyquil (typo) to help your cough and sleep. try drinking herbal tea if you like it.
