I started leaving my dog, golden retriever of ten months, outside and I am worried that he would keep wanting to come inside. He is shedding and seems too big to keep inside anymore. We built a dog house for him but he doesn't want to go in. Is it okay to keep him outside now?

No it's not okay. Brush him on a regular basis and he won't shed as much. He needs to be near people. They are pack animals. Why would you shove your companion outside? How would you feel if you were forced to stay in the backyard constantly? Think about it!
Sounds to me like since he isn't in the cutesy puppy stage you want to ditch him to the backyard. How sad, you don't deserve to be a pet owner.
There is a poem exactly about this same situation. How the dog doesn't understand why now it's been put in the backyard no longer part of the pack.
Your dog is not too big to keep inside. Honor your obligation to keep your pet as part of the family, if you can't do that find him a proper home that will. Putting him in the backyard is neglect.

Did you not know before you got your dog that Goldens shed like crazy and are large size dogs when full grown? 10 months is too big? Wait till he hits 1.5 yrs...

O_o

Dogs are pack animals, and they will want to be with their human packs. Unless the humans live outside in little dog houses too, he's not going to take being banished from the comfort of a human house and human companionship nicely.

If size and shedding are bugging you that much, please give him up to a rescue group or shelter so he can be adopted by a more suitable family. Nothing's worse than living with a mismatched owner who'd just keep the dog tied up outside. He's only 10 months old...he still has a very good chance of starting a new life with a family who understands the pros and cons of owning a Golden.

You should NOT leave your dog outside at all. Dogs are social animals and they love human company. Leaving your dog outside is inhumane and will make your dog sad and maybe even agressive. Especially a retriever. They NEED human contact! If you're not ready to have him, why did you get him in the first place, especially when you knew it would grow to be a big dog and you have no space in your home?? Sure, it was a cute little puppy, wasn't it? You had your laughs, but now that he's too much trouble... "Keep it in the garden! It drools!! It sheds!! It barks!! It wants to play!! Throw him out to the garden!!" If it rains, if it snows, no prob!! The dog has his own house!! Try living outside in a wodden hut with little protection from the elements, when all you want is to be with your people, inside!!
So my answer is, NO, it's not good to keep him outside! Either you find a way to keep it indoors or you find a new master that will actually love your dog and asccept him as a friend and companion!

First off why would you buy a dog if you are going to leave him outside? Did you not consider that this puppy is going to grow up and get bigger and since its a golden it is going to shed? Goldens thrive on human interaction and if you just decide to leave him outside it will make him into a complete unhappy dog. This could lead to behavior problems later on such as aggression. At 10 months he is definitly too young to be left outside alone. He is at a crutial age where he needs to be around people. Why not instead of leaving him outside train him, you should want to be with your new puppy. If its such a hassle to deal with him shedding then you might need to reconsider wheather a dog is right for you. If all you are going to do is leave him outside then give him to someone who lives an active life style and is willing to spend time with the dog and make him happy. Goldens are very active dogs and they need active owners.

I have 2 Great Danes in my house.

Your dog is not too big to be in your home so stop making excuses.

Teach your dog manners so you're not worried about the dog inside the house.

How would you feel if living inside was the only thing you knew and then you got chucked outside?

Dogs are pack animals, they need to be with their pack, what you are doing by seperating the pack is doing a lot of harm.....you will start to see behavioural problems.

In regards to the shedding.....brush your dog everyday like you're meant to and it won't be so much of a problem....you're being lazy and selfish.

Why on earth do people have dogs in the first place if they're just going to put them outside and leave them there????

Try to find a good home for the poor thing, and if you decide you want another dog, pick a breed that stays small and doesn't shed so you'll be willing to let it live indoors where it belongs.

C'mon people, dogs are pack animals. They want to be with you in the house. If he's shedding, get him groomed. It is NEVER okay to keep a dog outside.

You should never leave your dog outside. Dogs are social creatures and need to be with people. Keeping dogs alone outside put them at risk for serious health and behavioral problems. Dogs should be house pets, especially puppies.

My opinion I would leave him inside just because thats what I would do. But he is okay being outside he just needs to get use to the fact that he is going to be any outside dog. Some dogs react differently and may take longer to get use to where they are going to be. I feel it is okay to keep him outside.

Depending where you live, yes/no! If in a cold climate area now, then no...The dog did not have time to adjust to the climate. You may consider next spring. Make sure the animal has outdoor protection, covered kennel, bedding, water, food, etc...I have both indoor and outside dogs....They all love me the same...A animal has a natural way of protecting themself during cooler climate that is why they shed.. Brush, bursh, brush, You may also consider a garage. Don't forget bedding and loving...good luck
