Good question may i add. Well Xanax is used for depression, and anxiety. There is no magic pill out there, and there is not magic wand for them to use on you . That pill should help how you feel, but if it is not, then tell them and they can give you something else. Before doing that though, ask yourself if it is helping at all, and if it is, it is doing it's job. The rest if up to you. No pill, no wand, no person, living thing can make you happy if you don't want to be happy. Sometimes we get so use to being in an unhappy state, that we really don't want to be happy we just say that. If you really want to be happy, and the pill does work for you somewhat, you can ask them for something else, or something else you can take with it. Then the rest is up to you. You are the only person who can really help yourself get happy, all they are doing is giving you idea's, and trying to guide you thought this time, you need to get involved in finding things that are positive, and make you happy, and you proably don't know any cause it has been so long since you have been happy. So try some things out, and you might just find you are feel a heck of a lot better, then just sitting and waiting for the Xanax or any other drug to make you happy, cause they are not going to do that, they are not happy pills. They are there to help you get relieve so you can try things, and find out what does make you happy, so give it a try. Can't hurt. Remember stay positive.

There are some good answers here. I'd like to add that Xanax IS NOT an anti depressant. It is a depressant. Anti Depressants work on different receptors in our brains than Xanax does.
Xanax is highly addictive. Anti Depressants are not. Xanax works in approxamently 20 minutes after you take it orally, and a bit faster if you desolve it under your tongue. Anti depressants have to build up within your system to give you the desired affect. So, it can take anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks to get your dosage where you want it.
If a person has been diagnosed with depression Anti Depressants are usually prescribed. If a person has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder then at times short term usage of tranquilizers are prescribed. Short term usage because we become addicted to tranquilizers such as Xanax. We have to use more to get the same results.
Having said all that, if you are depressed then Xanax will not help, since it is a depressant similar to alcohol and Valium and it depresses your nervous system. If you are depressed then ANTI depressants, ones that inhibit (stop or slow down) the re-uptake (clean up of extra left over endorphins) of the the "feel good" chemicals that are released from our transmitters, are the better drug of choice. In doing this our receptors are allowed to receive more of our natural feel good endorphins- hence we feel better, happier and more alive.
Bottom line? You're taking the wrong drug.

Because Xanax can dull your senses. It is often used for people who have tremendous anxiety. Dulling the senses help these people not feel so anxious. As you found out, it can also dull pleasure senses too.
Only you can decide if this is worth it. If you really need the Xanax to deal with other issues, you may have to put up with this side effect for a short time. If you find the not happy feeling is something you miss tremendously (I would) you may want to try another medication or you may want to try a lower dosage of the Xanax.
Good luck to you.

You should never take anti-depressants without prescription. If it is under prescription then you need to make an appointment with your doctor and tell her how you feel. She may need to switch your medication. Also, if you started another medication after the xanax it may be interferring negatively. Any number of things could be the cause-alcohol, drug use.

Xanax is very effective for relieving anxiety but can cause or worsen depression, especially at higher doses. It doesn't take 6 weeks to work, it works pretty much right away. Antidepressants take up to 6 weeks to reach their full potential.

It will take atleast 6 weeks for you to feel the full effect. If you have been on it longer than that then maybe you need to go on a higher dosage. It could be the wrong medication for you.
Talk to your doctor and see if they can help.
Good Luck : )
