I have tried the following SSRIs-Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro and now Zoloft. They all make me extremely hyperactive like I can't slow down my mind. I talk extremely fast and loud on them and constantly feel agitated and jittery from the hyperactivity. They all help greatly with my anxiety and depression but I don't feel calm and relaxed on them, only hyperactive and very high energy. Are there any antidepressants that have more of a calming effect that don't cause hyperactivity? I'm so hyperactive I feel like a small child high on candy and sugar or too much caffeine.

Everyone responds to ADs differently, so it is not unusual to have to try numerous times in order to find one that works best for you. I have taken Paxil, Celexa, Remeron, Luvox, and Zoloft. Zoloft worked best for me, but you apparently are not happy with it to this point. My first suggestion would be to talk to your doctor about your dosage. Could be that altering your dosage may help with your aggitation and hyperactivity. Often, these meds need to be adjusted for optimum effect. Next, consider the time of day or night that you are taking the med. If you are finding that you are too 'wound up', maybe it would help to take it at another time. If you need to change meds, then talk to your doctor about Remeron. It is not a typical SSRI and therefore does not exhibit the same side effects. Remeron (mirtazipine), does not inhibit the absorbsion of seratonin like SSRIs, but increases the production dopamine primarily. The major side-effect of Remeron for many is it's sedative quality. Many people, myself included, experience a very tranquillizing effect from this med. It is often taken at night, just prior to bedtime as it helps to fall asleep. Anxiety and depression when severe enough to require meds, is often a trade off as ALL meds have negative side-effects. The trick is to find the one that creates a tolerable balance between preferred effect and reduced level of negative effects. Good Luck. -Rob

Sometimes taking too many anti-depressants can make u manic. Have u been diagnosed as depressive? Have the doctors looked to see if ur bi-polar? Occasionally when someone is depressed the docs will treat that with the anti-depressants in some cases that will make the person switch over to a manic phase. Which will make u hyperactive, talk a lot, grandiose behavior, spend money, wear lots of make-up.. is that u? Or r u being over medicated with the amounts of meds ur taking? You should be seeing one doctor, take him all the meds ur on and ask him if this is a safe level. Do the meds mix okay, because sometimes some meds dont mix well with others. I know that Welbutrin, Celexa r some great meds for depression with very little side effects. Look into them and ask ur doc about them. You definately shouldnt be feeling what u have said in ur statement, u must be on a very large dose. Are u taking ur meds correctly, at certain time during the day. Check with ur doc, take all ur meds in and let them have a look at them to make sure ur not over-medicating. Good luck!

This is a major red flag that you do not have unipolar depression but bipolar. Talk to your doctor about this.

Antidepressants can trigger mania in bipolar people and a lot of people don't find out they are actually BP until a reaction like this alerts the doctor. I'm not diagnosing you here, nobody here can do that, but this is serious. The treatment for the two disorders it different. Although many bipolar people take an antidepressant (sometimes more than one), it is generally in addition to a mood stabilizer (and sometimes other medications as well.)

This could be a side effect of the drug or you could have a bipolar disorder. Treating people with bipolar disorder with antidepressants alone can send the person into a hypomanic, manic or mixed episode. Pressured speech, racing thoughts, agitation, increased energy and hyperactivity are all common signs of mania and hypomania. You really need to talk to your doctor about this. You may need a mood stabilizer in addition to the antidepressant to help keep you at an even keel.

Prozac is used to treat major depressive disorder, bulimia nervosa (an eating disorder) obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder.
Prozac is sometimes used together with another medication called olanzapine (Zyprexa). to treat depression caused by bipolar disorder (manic depression). This combination is also used to treat depression after at least 2 other medications have been tried without successful treatment of symptoms.

I would check with your doctor about lowering the dosage.I honestly think that you should make an ASAP appointment with your doctor and go over all of the side effects with him/her.I have taken Prozac before but did not suffer side effects.Zoloft is the one I am concerned about in general because of USA wide complaints.Hope I was at least somewhat helpful.

I know that Prozac has that side-effect, I'm not sure about the others. Ask your doctor about Effexor, it doesn't work the same way, so doens't have the same side effects.

Sounds like you have ADHD.
You should get tested for ADHD and if your doctor agrees that you have attention deficit then he/she should be able to find the right meds for you.
Many people with ADHD have that type of reaction to medications that should normally calm people down.
also your Anxiety could be a part of ADHD and getting treated for ADHD could help your Anxiety and depression better than medications made for them ever will.
