Hi, I & my spouse were working in US till Nov 2005 & we moved to india . We didnt file the taxes as we were outside US. We didnt get an extension either. Also we dont have any documentation except some payslips , no W-2. Can anyone suggest how do we proceed? Is there any way just by SSN alone we can pay the taxes?

Yes, you can still file for 2005 returns. There might be penalty if you owe. However, if you had tax withholding chances are the government owes you.

You should contact your formal employer to get a copy of W-2 if possible. Otherwise you can use the last pay stub to fill out a Substitute W-2.

IRS probably received a copy of your W-2 from your formal employer. They will reconcile and make corrections if necessary.

Best wishes.

You can file late but with penalties. If you are due a refund it may be reduced because of this. If you owe, you may want to consider talking to a tax attorney to limit your liability. As for the W-2, you may be able to retrieve the information using the pay slips ( they may contain the employer ID #) and your SS#. Try utilizing an online service like Turbo Tax or something similar to figure it out electronically (it can use the information to determine your wages and taxes withheld via the Employer ID and your SS#). The cost for filing is around $40.00 US using Turbo Tax.

You may have to contact the employer(s) to get copies of the W-2's (they have to keep them on file for a few years). If not available then your last option would be to contact the IRS (www.irs.gov) and explain your circumstances. Good Luck.

Contact your local Commissioner of Revenue who works for the county in the state you live in. They are usually very nice and helpful. You could call an IRS toll free number and they could tell you what to do. Don't be scared. Just do what is right and everything will be okay. Usually the County Courthouse can tell you where you need to go to find out. A phone call will do it and they can send you the papers. Sometime it is easier to have a CPA, certified public accountant, help you with your taxes.

Well, you need some sort of extension from the IRS. They do make exceptions for people who were abroad on the April deadline. You will need to get your W-2'sfrom your employer's payroll department. They might charge you $15 or something, but they stillneed to get those for you.
