I am thinking about joining the army, and I was wondering when they deploy people overseas. After basic training, you go to AIT(advanced individual training), do you get shipped out after you get done with AIT or do you leave right after basic training.

After you finish AIT you will report to your unit . You only deploy if they deploy or if you are in a needed MOS .

Neither. The Army is the only branch that everyone goes straight to AIT after Basic Training. You finish all of your training, then report to your unit. If your unit is already deployed, you may go there and meet up with them,or stay behind and wait their return. If your unit is not depoying, you won't either. A friend of mine has been chasing Iraq and Afghanistan since the first troops deployed after 9/11. He is finally going to go summer of 2007. Your job also decides if you will be assigned in a probable position to deploy. Almost every job will deploy, but some jobs have so few people in them that the chances of deploying are small.

You would have to go through AIT first, otherwise you are non-MOS qualified. In many cases you would go through basic, then AIT, and then go through a train up with your unit before deploying. After deployment you would probably go through some additional training in Kuwait. Many people might not believe it but it is the goal of the Army to send troops over that have been well trained for the environment.

About replacements. The Army is not running the same type of replacement operation we had in past conflicts where a soldier just gets orders to report to a unit that is already in the combat theater. There is no repo-depot in the IZ theater (exceptions apply). Normally a new troop would go to a unit BEFORE it ships out.

Considering you haven't been to basic yet, depending on your MOS, it could be late 2007 before you got a shot at the IZ and we could start seeing considerable troop withdrawals by then.

Hopefully before you join the Army you'll get them to tell you what job that want you to do and what schools you'll have to attend to do that job. After training some soldiers stay at the school to train others, some go to other places in the USA and some go overseas. While you're in training you should be given an opportunity to say what you'd like to do, but since "you're in the Army now" they'll send you wherever they need you most.

Good Luck!
