Hello!
Generally, the first "family" of med's that are used are called Benzodiazapines....such as Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan.
Then if time tells it isn't sufficient alone. then usually an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) "family" of med's are added, such as Paxil, Zoloft, Wellbutrin. There is usually a good benefit by partnering these 2 family's of med's.
I hope this helped.
I wish you the best! :)

I would say there is no "main drug" that's prescribed for panic attacks. Patients can be given benzodiazepines like Xanax, Ativan, or Klonopin. Others may be given SSRIs or antidepressants like Paxil, Zoloft, or Lexapro. The prescribing physician must take into account the patient's medical history, symptoms, and patient preference--among other things--before writing a prescription, and since everyone is different, I personally don't think anyone can say there's a "most-prescribed" medication for panic attacks...although it's definitely possible to compile a list of "often-prescribed" meds!

I will now go for the next stage DUAL CARRIAGE way, probably at the weekend, with my husband accompanying me first then the solo drive, if successful the final stage of driving on motorway

i take ativan for when i feel a attack coming on and i cant calm myself down i use to take zoloft but i found it only made me worse. Im now on celexa and it seems to be workin only been on it a few weeks dr said takes 4 to 6 weeks to see any difference so im not having any side afects yet which is a good thing. but there is no main drug you would be prescribed because everyone is different and reacts differently to different medications so there is a list of commonly prescribed medications but no main one.

I think it mainly depends on a few different things. Who the Dr. is, who the patient is, how the patient acts, how severe the symptoms are etc.
A few commonly prescribed antidepressants include Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, and Sarafem. Anti-anxiety medications, like Xanax and Klonopin, are also widely used.

Xanax is what I take sometimes. I dont take it on a regular basis just when im feeling really anxious. Ive realized I have the power to calm myself through thoughts and breathing for the most part, but there are those days. I have also taken ativan(much too strong for me) There are many more im sure, you just have to talk to your doctor and find whats right for you, the first one you try may not work well. you may have to try a couple.

I wouldsay Zoloft works great. My mom suffers from panic attacks, and she has tried everything....Wellbutrin, klonopin....and zoloft only gives her minor headaches, all the others make her feel sad most of the time....Hope it helps. You should also consider going to therapies w/ a psychologist, and eventually you could reduce the medications you have to take because you learn to control your body...May I ask, what triggers your attacks?
