give him hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting to get as much of the chocolate out of his stomach before he digests too much of it, while you're doing that your friend should be on the phone with the emergency clinic to see what they say about it, and plan on taking him there.

your friend's lab will most likely be just fine. The actual amount that most dogs need to ingest is rather significant in comparison to their size.

for an average golden, the TOXIC amount of dark or semi sweet chocolate would be equivalent to Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight.

Approximately one POUND (16 ounces) of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog.

So assuming that the dog in question is an average lab (60 - 80 lbs), we're talking between three and four POUNDS of chocolate to poison the dog. You're safe if it was just one large bar.

Watch for any unusual symptoms - make sure that the dog has access to fresh water, and call the vet if it vomits.

Make certain that you keep the wrapper (if you have it still) and write down the time that it ate the chocolate. In addition, write down the weight of the chocolate bar and which type it was, so that you have that information handy.

It would take a significant amount, again, to fatally poison your friend's dog. But the problem is that any chocolate for dogs makes them want more, because they have a sweet tooth.

Be sure to warn your friend to keep all sweets away from dog-friend-chocaholic in the future...

Chocolate is not good for dogs. But they do have to eat alot before anything can happen, I think it is 2 oz to 1 lb of dog. If they eat to much of it they can die. (Sorry but it is true) but they have to eat alot. I have a weiner dog and she ate my easter candy that had choc syrup, nuts and covered in choc. She is still here; all she did was run around the house for a few hours like a crazy dog. Just keep and eye on him/her. and call the vet in the morning. They can tell you what to do. and ask him what the amount is for your size dog. and you wont have to worry next time. But do keep the candy up away from the dog. because for some reason they love choc. I hope this helps some.

Get that dog to the vet NOW! Even though you do not see any symptoms now from the chocolate, that doesnt mean you wont down the road or none at all. Chocolate is deadly to dogs when eaten in large amounts. Call your vet too to see what you can do at home until you get to the vet. You are better off getting that dog to the vet though to have him looked at.

your dog will probably be fine especially since it is a big breed of dog which is good. If it was a smaller dog I would be more worried since it would take less to poisen it. I would take your dog to the vet to see if they can check her blood and make sure everything looks okay. They may even have her vomit to get most of the chocolate out so it wont cause her body more harm. I wouldnt be too worried but if your dog starts running into things, having siezures, sudden collapse ect. take your dog to the vet immedietly. Again its better to be safe than sorry have your dog checked out soon so they can treat her. Good luck and happy holidays!

I would say, give the dog lots of liquids. By eating chocolate dogs can get a bad diarrea and that can cause horrible damage. If your dog seems less active, or just different I would bring him/her to the emergency room.

Contact the vet. Chocolate doesn't affect all dogs. My dog has gotten into my candy bars, and it hasn't affected her one bit. But, it's better to be safe than sorry.

don't panic, you'll stress the dog out. my dog ate a 1 lb chocolate and she was fine. she ran a small feavor for a while but she got better. If your dog starts to act sluggish or lazy. you might want to take it to a vet but the dog SHOULD be ok for now

Hopefully, you have ipecac syrup. You need to induce vomitting.

From about.com: If convulsions, seizures, shock or lethargy are present as symptoms, do NOT induce vomiting!!

In ALL poisoning cases, please seek veterinary care immediately! Vomiting is only a temporary fix, to allow you enough time to get your pet to a vet!

To induce vomiting, give orally, one teaspoon of Syrup of Ipecac, or two teaspoons of Hydrogen Peroxide. In a desperate pinch, a teaspoon of table salt will also have the correct effect.........
