They are not rare.

The Dalmatian is very very playful. Must get professional training while young because they will be very hard to control if not given a special attention because they play all the time. Might get deaf if ears are not cleaned regularly, natural hunters and very loyal to its feeder.

Ours Seldom barks but will growl if provoked and bite if hurted. Be very Careful with Dalmatians around children they can bump them cause the dog doesn't know its own size.

But overall its a great pet and give you a lot of affection.

Dalmatians are very good looking but they are definitely NOT the ideal dog for most people. They only became popular after a few Disney movies made every kid in America want one. Shortly after that, thousands and thousands of them ended up in shelters. Then the demand for Dalmatians dropped very low again and you seldom see them anymore. They aren't rare, however. There is a Dalmatian Club of America where all of the best breeders can be found. You can also see them at dog shows.

I can only tell you what I know from owning a beautiful, happy, healthy Dalmatian.
First off, Dalmatians are not rare, at least not where I live (Aus). They are not #1 on the wanted list but they are really fantastic dogs. My Dal had such a friendly personality, they are GREAT with kids (my friends, relatives, myself and my brother) and other household animals. You really, really need to make sure you attend ALL obedience classes because they can become very dominant and will be very temperamental later in life. They need a LOT of exercise to prevent destructiveness when bored. Dals will chew up ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in sight if they are bored. Do not leave toys, shoes, clothes etc. around if left alone - he WILL chew them up. Dals are very social and love human company. They are very much a family dog and HATE to be away from family or humans in general. Like I said, they will chew and bark when bored. They shed like crazy! You need to brush them once a day or a few times a week to get rid of dead hair and to keep their coat healthy and clean. They have a really bad doggy odour so you need to bathe them once a month or when necissery. They can be aggressive, high strung, temperamental etc. when not socialized enough or when purchased from temperamental lines. These are very smart dogs. I don't believe they [most] are like Labradors but I know my Dalmatian was fantastic. They do need a confident owner who will be totally commited to his/her obedience training and someone who is confident in owning one. You need to search for a long time to find a perfect, well-bred, healthy, good temperamented Dal as they were a fad during the 90's due to the popular movie '101 Dalmatians'. They bark a lot. Do not get one of you aren't willing to take it for a long, interesting walk EACH and EVERY SINGLE day. [From http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com]: " Dalmatians are not Golden Retrievers. The best Dalmatians are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal, but they have an independent mind of their own and are not pushovers to raise and train. They can be manipulative, and some are willful, obstinate, and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say." [From http://yourpurebredpuppy.com]: " Serious health problems. Because Dalmatians are prone to forming dangerous urinary stones, they require lifelong monitoring of their diet and urination habits. One-third of all Dalmatians cannot hear, or can hear in only one ear. Other health problems are also common."

If you were to buy one, PLEASE make sure you buy one from a reputable breeder and make sure they are BAER tested (tested for deafness) as deafness is VERY common in Dalmatians, just like cancer is very common in Goldens. Also, please do NOT buy a Dal or ANY dog from a pet store as they all come from puppy mills, no matter what the people that work there say.

They aren't quite like labs. (I would describe them more like Huskies.) They tend to be energetic, some are short tempered, and usually end up in adoption agencies.
They can be aggressive (Ask my uncle, he had two, one bit his son, and the other bit his wife.) They can also end up deaf. This is often with dalmatians. Deaf dogs can become very difficult and hard to work with, but like any dog, with proper training comes out a great dog.
If you are considering one, be careful. They are not rare, but it is hard to find the right one.

*Dalmatians were bred to run under or along-side of horse-drawn carriages and therefore have an vast about of stamina and energy. They do not like to just sit around all day with nothing to do. They are playful, happy-go-lucky, extremely sensitive and loyal. The Dalmatian needs human companionship, without which it is likely to become depressed. For this reason they do not make good yard dogs. They have excellent memories and can remember for years any bad treatment it has had. The Dalmatian enjoys playing with children, but may be too rambunctious for toddlers. They get along well with other pets, but some may be aggressive with strange dogs; males often dislike other males. Somewhat high-strung, and can be timid without enough socialization. Quite intelligent, but can be willful. Generally does well with firm, consistent training. The Dalmatian is trainable to a high degree of obedience. They can be trained for defense and are good watchdogs. Dalmatians often have large litters, sometimes up to 15 pups. Some can be aggressive if not properly raised.

Many people adopted them without knowing the responsibilites that come with dalmations. So that's where their "high strung" reputation comes from. But really, they are very energetic and need a lot of space to roam through. They are good pets for children and adults, but it's best that children play with puppies since an adult dalmation could harm a child since it is so strong ( but not intentionally). So they make great pets but people just need to make sure they can live up to the needs of a dalmation.

thanks to 101 dalmations years ago they were far from rare. they were bred to stupidity by back yard breeders looking to make a buck because everyone's kids wanted one. they are not like labs, or not anymore thanks to the back yard breeders. the reason they are not popular anymore is because dalmations tend to be tempermental, and have many medical conditions that are genetic and many people decided after owning one, they wouldn't get another. basically they are no longer the dog of the day.

and please don't ever buy a dog from a pet shop all you're doing is supporting backyard breeders and puppy mills who don't care a thing about dogs.

They're not like Labs, they're not very smart from what I've seen. They weren't rare back during 101 Dalmatians, they were in all the shelters around that time because of people buying them up. Don't ever buy from a pet shop. They're horrible places that hurt dogs and buy from puppy mills.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?0rj4

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

Dals are rare because they always were rare, then came the movies!

Every butthead breeder decided to make dal pups. Quick money,

Simple inbreeding just requires 2 pups. and it makes sick and crazy pups! Since the deaths of most of the inbred sick dogs, dals are making a comeback.

I hope you never see a dal in a pet store. I got my pup from a reputable breeder, and so should you!

Dals are naturally curious and loads of fun. they are not high-strung or prone to genetic diseases, unless mis-bred!

Junior is the light of our lives!

They are not rare, maybe not as popular as some breeds, but not rare. Please do not buy any dog from a pet store! They come from puppy mills. Horrible places.
