For some it is a religious ritual. For the most part that extra skin is removed because bacteria and dirt can collect in the extra spaces and cause infection and odor and such.

Well, the Jews started it and I can't remember why, but the majority of Americans have started doing it, Jewish or not. However I've dated a few Europeans that were Christian and NOT circumsized.
A circumized penis generally stays cleaner because there is no foreskin for guck to get trapped under. A lot of men know how to keep this area clean, but face it, some people just have nasty hygiene habits.
You may be opening a can of worms here because there is a whole movement of people who think circumsision is cruel and limits the sexual pleasure that comes with having a foreskin...because men are so repressed and don't enjoy sex enough as it is...I haven't slept with a single circumsized man who had difficulty having an orgasm...women on the other hand...

most people do it for religion purpose, Muslim and Jewish are required for the male. Then without thinking about purpose people do it to their children .
Now.. other than religious reason this is may be the benefits:
it is easy to clean , good hygiene.
Less sensitivity which get the man to take longer to reach climax which of course better for the woman.
New research found that it reduce the HIV infection by 50%, why we do not know yet.

It's main purpose either involves religion (Judaism) or aesthetics. It's also supposed to keep the tip of the penis clean. It is a traumatic and painful procedure. I would never have it done on my sons.

if you're Jewish/Christian/(I think)Muslim there are religious reasons. Plus uncircumcised individuals have to clean under the foreskin, which is a hassle. I think being circumcised can also reduce the chance of contracting HIV

For cleanliness is a concern. They are finding recently that it plays a part in other transmissions too, such as the HPV.

it is supposed to prevent guys from masterbating a lot. the bad news is that it takes away a lot of the sensitivity in the head so sex isn't as much fun.

no you don't "eventually" get an infection, that's really stupid. you get an infection if you are a dirty pig who doesn't take a shower, or doesn't clean himself down there. I am "un-cut" and its alright, I take care of myself and never had any hygienic problems.
