Yes, this is a really stupid question, but I moved recently from California to Minnesota. I noticed that whenever I buy something here in MN, i don't have to pay sales tax. Can someone explain to me why? Is CA the only state that has sales tax?

Minnesotta does have a sales tax. They do not tax food or clothing. It is up to each state's legislature to decide if they will have a sales tax and if so, what to tax.

You will pay tax in Minnesota on most other items.

I dont know for sure, but I bet you anything there is a tax somewhere else that you wouldn't neccessarily be paying in CA to make up the difference in the state's income..like home taxes or payroll tax...I have sales tax here in Tennessee too by the way.

States make their own laws which govern taxes, etc. so each state decides these things. My state, VA, has sales taxes, personal property taxes and real estate taxes, vehicle sales taxes, extra localities taxes, motel and hotel taxes, sin taxes like alcohol and cigarettes extra tax, gasoline taxes and a bunch more taxes. More states have sales taxes than don't. Delaware is the only state I can think of that doesn't have sales tax in this area.

In MN you don't pay sales tax on items you 'need'. Like food...there are tax on other things up there just not on necesities.

You go to the store by a loaf of bread...not tax. Go to same store and by soda...you pay tax.

Lots of states are like that...but you get reemed on taxes up there...yikes they are high just like California.

Added Info: Oh yeah you can go to the reservations and get things much cheaper up there. ;)
