Chlorine could cause it, so can contaminated water, or lead etc. If it's pure water, like found thru reverse osmosis, then most likely it is because you're having a hard time digesting your last meal. If you're over wieght, or you have a complex diet, you may have damaged ability to digest food properly.
The complex of acid formed varies in accordance with the complexity of the meal, and chemical reagents are formed which disrupt absorption of nutrients, and the body, not being ordered to handle excess gracefully, simply adds more acid. Adding water exacerbates the problem due to the, now diluted, acid being less effective on the food.
If it is something else, and/or, simplifying, and reducing dietary intake of culprit foods (if it's got more than 5, or so, ingrediants it may be hard to digest), and drinking only pure, uncontaminated, water doesn't help, then please consult your health practitioner.

Drinking water will not affect acid reflux at night. It is not the water that is bothering you at night but the acid reflux. The water has nothing to do with it.

Here is a natural remedy to cure your acid reflux/gerd and hearth burn http://acidreflux.toptips.org
Acid reflux disease, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs due to the coexistence of two medical conditions. The first acid reflux disease contributing condition is a retrograde flow of stomach contents into the esophagus. However, the reflux itself does not necessarily lead to gastro-esophageal reflux disease symptoms or histologic changes, and can occur among healthy individuals as well. In this case, the process is referred to as "physiologic gastroesophageal reflux".

Becuase the only thing that has changed between the last time you drank water and now is that you were previously standing (vertical) and now you are sleeping (horizontal)..this creates airtraps.

It will mix with the stomach contents and make it easier for them to pass back up into the esophagus.
