you should start thinking of saving as something that you HAVE to do. You know you have to pay rent and have taken extra steps to make sure it's a priority. Think of saving as paying yourself. just like any other bill you have. If you are in the mind frame of spending first and saving whats left over there will never be anything left over to save. I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing the money in a savings account grow each month. it becomes a bit like a game for me, How much can I grow my savings this month. You might want to check with your employer to see if they have any type of automatic deduction from your paycheck. Some companys will deduct money from your paycheck and deposit it into your savings account for you, the benefit is that you never have the chance to spend the money but it is always in an account that you have full control of.

well....that's self control...
here are some tips i suggest:
1. Since you already put your rent in another account, why dont you put an extra $50 into that account every month. After one or two month, you can start to put $100, $150...into that account. Do it in a pace you can manage.
2. Retirement saving. Ask your company HR to deduct money direcly from your paycheck and put it into ur retirement saving plan.
3. Budget. Have a budget plan. This is always a good money management skill everyone should learn.
4. Have a friend or family to manage your money for you.
5. Don't bring too much cash with you when you go out. Some people tend to act first and think later. If you have no cash with you, it gives you more time to think (do you really need to buy this? is it necessary?)

Saving is must in life even if you are rich. If you can save money for rent, I am sure you can save more than that. I suggest you have a hobby which takes a lot of your time. That way you would have little time thinking about and going shopping.

You need a simple debt management strategy. We all do as we can do the same thing as you. Have a look at debt management sites and try to extract information from them so you to can put what they are saying into practice. All it takes is some self control and believe me as you build funds you will become more astute with your spending.

Yes, Its a very useful method, the trustee method. Give your money to a family member or close friend and tell THEM to use it for YOU or keep it. For example, give them the rent money and get THEM to pay the landlord.
