Territory. We mark our ground with locks and alarms, animals mark their ground with scent. They're not thankfull. Cats are evil. They pretend to be cute and happy but no doubt if the food stops comming, they'll eat us in a minute.
Kitty is saying this is mine, it doesn't smell like me anymore, we'll take care of that right now.

You have described my cat's behavior exactly... he cannot resist a clean litter box! Looks like it is a pretty normal cat-thing from the answers you have here... I think its cute.
Oh, my cat also pees or poops in the litter box when I ASK him to - isn't that mighty cooperative of him? Makes up for the times he goes just when I have cleaned the box.

I know exactly what is going on. Okay so you know when you are playing around or watching tv all day and you never use the bathroom. So you dont realize you have to go until you pass by the bath room or you hear a toilet flush. Then all of the sudden you have the urge to go. Same thing with a cat. When he sees you messing around ( cleaning) his litter box he remembers or feels the need to go. So after you clean it he has to go.
Also at petco we were talking to a lady who had one of those autamatic cleaning litter boxes and whenever the litter box cleaned itself all of her cats came rushing to the litter box to go pee or poop because the felt the urge to go when they heard to the sound of it cleaning.
So really that is what i think is going on. Your cat is just remined that he needs to go or he feels the urge to go when he sees your cleaning his litter box, just like when someone mentions they have to use the bathroom or you hear a toilet flush it reminds you that you have to go.
I hope this helps you out. Also if you think something is wrong with your cat take him to the vet if you think it has to do with his brain or something. Which I doubt. But good luck and happy holidays!

My cat does the same thing. I figure it like this. When I put nice clean sheets on my bed, I can't wait to get in them at night... nice and clean and smelling good. Maybe it's the same with their litter box. Nice and clean, can't wait to use it. I have 2 cats and only the younger one does it. It could be she just wants to beat the older one to the box and be the first one in. I don't know, that just my guess. I wish they could talk so they can explain themselves!

Probably because now he has somewhere to go to the bathroom that is not taking up by other matter. He probably wanted to go before but could not dig or find a clean spot to go. Maybe change your litter box twice a day. In the morning and before bed.....Would you want to go to the bathroom in a toilet that was full?

For the very same reason that you always spill the full glass of red Kool-Aid immediately after you scrub the kitchen floor. Cleaning disturbs the Equilibrium of the Universe, and all matter conspires to restore it to its original condition. Cats, being particularly sensitive creatures, rush to do their part to restore the balance of nature.

Natural instinct and maybe he has been waiting to use the litter tray when it isclean. My cat would not use the litter tray until it was clean. Then she would useit. Cats by nature are fussy creatures.

He probably likes to use the litter box when it is clean. Just like humans we like to use the bathroom when it is clean.

Could be its' natural instinct to mark its' territory, but moreso, your cat is stimulated to go because he/she knows it's clean (most animals, like people, prefer not to step in any surprises). Ever notice how the urge "to go" increases , the closer you get to home (& dramatically, when you're at the door!) Going to the john (especially a clean one) are simple little daily pleasures we all enjoy. BUT...it is a cat...probably does it just to belittle you, show you how things are run in the household,..you know...
