what do I replace if I don not have to replace the entire powertrain control module

Since the fault is internal in the module, the module will have to replaced. Before I spent a lot of money, I would get some good electrical cleaner and spray all the connections, plug and unplug and spray again. One dirty pin can cause all sorts of bad stuff to happen.
They are very high priced at the dealer, so check your local salvage yard.

Yes. Make sure you use a voltmeter on all wires going into the brain, as there may be an electrical spike that caused the failure. Be sure to do that before you install the new pcm, they're not cheap and I'm sure you don't want to buy two.

YES IT'S AN INTERNAL PROBLEM. DO NOT INSTALL A USED ONE. REMANS ARE NOW AT A RESONABLE PRICE.
