Try adding things you like or are used to. Familiar furniture or pictures on the wall...just stuff that doesn't make you feel out of place in your own home.

First everything must have a place and everything must be in its place. Then use your favorite colors in pillows, paintings and rugs to please your eyes. Plants, family pictures and books warm up a room too. Small groups of your favorite collections will please you too. Last but not least lighting is important as is smell. So use a good candle or favorite scent sticks.
These suggestions are minor and inexpensive. If money is no object you might use a decorator to help you find homey and comfortable.
Your might also try finding what looks good to you in magazines and recreate the look in your house.

Don't forget about your windows! The right window treatments can add an immediate warmth and "cozy feel" to any room. You have a wide variety to choose from, depending on your personal design style and your privacy and insulation needs. BlindCrafter.com has a variety of custom blinds and shades to choose from.
Since warmth in the winter is often a big factor in making a home feel comfortable, you may opt for energy-efficient blinds and shades. Comfortex Symphony Double Honeycomb cellular shades are available in many new, warm, inviting colors, and will make the room feel as inviting as it looks.

Hmm thats difficult - whats homey for you may not be homey for others - I would say - soft lighting - a good choice of color - plenty of soft pillows or cushions - visit some show homes - you will get a pretty good idea then

When's the next local Parade of Homes? GO!! take notes on what you like decoration-wise.... paint colors, picture subjects, etc..... Visit home decor stores, and again, take notes on what you like. Think about what you like- colors, fabrics, images, etc....
I like cool colors, open spaces, order, pictures of my family and the outdoors, reading.... Soooo, my home has a lot of things that reflect that-
My walls are painted white and sage-green, the floor plan is pretty open, and there's lots of pictures of my brothers, my dogs, my husband, etc.
I have a lot of bookshelves, filled with books, momentos, etc.
I also try to keep my home at least organized if not actually clean (Yes, there IS a difference between "organized" and "clean"...) I keep a blanket on the couch to snuggle up in, along with cushions for lounging against.
My mom keeps a big beanbag chair-sized pillow for floor-based TV viewing...
I like a clean smell, so I sometimes burn incense or candles to cover yucky smells when I can't find the source.
Best of Luck- Remember that it's your home, make it what you want!

First of all, think about paint. Are the walls stark white? What about a tan shade to make things a little warmer/cozier. Think plush toss pillows, throws in earthy colors. Candles, a nice throw rug. Plants, and lighting. Keep lamps on low.

Warm colors generally make people feel happy. Avoid white floors or walls, which makes things look disconnected. Center your furniture into conversation areas, and avoid turning furniture with the backs to doorways. Arrange pictures and furniture so that there are less blank spaces, and things flow well from ceiling to floor. Put lots of pictures around, with you or friends and family looking happy. Funny and offbeat items are my favorite touch for making people feel at ease (check out Jonathan Adler's book for tips!)

Pick Colors that are warm and cozy! Reds, Golds, Yellows, Oranges. Textiles are always comforting.. Art work is so important... Blank walls make for a cold environment. And lighting is important... Pillows accesories are so important... remember its all in the details!

warm colors, overstuffed furniture, a big bookshelf full of classic books, a homemade afghan or quilt draped over a chair, knick-knacks that reflect your personality - especially if your kids made them.
