"up at night" got it right. You are paying for the orthodontist's education, experience and skill. If we had to go to 8 years of college, buy over $100,000 worth of equipment to set up busness and be liable for any imperfections in our work...we'd get paid more too!

Go to eBay and buy the "Do It Yourself Braces" kit. It is a box full of wires and metal squares. Oh. Don't forget about the little rubber bands. Just think of all the money you will save on dental fees, not to mention you won't be paying tuition for 10-11 years of education beyond high school.

A lot of the high price comes from the cost for the orthodontist's time spent in check-ups and procedures and what-not. Since it is a specialized skill that few are trained to do they can charge a high price due to a lack of competition.

You're not really paying for the metal. You are paying for the doctor's skills and expertise and of course, his time.
