My hair is thick and is long in length and recently I have been getting really bad knots. I'm not sure if I need to use more or less conditioner.

the amount of conditioner you use is probably fine.

my hair is kind of the same way so in the morning, before i brush my hair, i use a little bit of leave-in conditioner or detangler spray. every once in awhile i go to a hairstylist and get my hair thinned out and this helps out a lot too.

you can get your hair thinned pretty much anywhere. there's no reason you should spend a rediculous amount of money for this because it's pretty hard to mess up terribly. i normally just go to a hair cuttery or great clips for this because it's cheap, fast, and they can't really mess up.

hope i helped.

I have long and thick hair too, so I use a lot of conditioner to prevent knots, so I think you should use more conditioner, and make sure you use a leave-in. Also, my hairdresser has told me when you start to get really bad knots that its time for a trim, so try that too.

You could try braiding it before going to bed. That will prevent it from getting tangled when you are sleeping (and since it doesn't cost anything, it's better than spending a bunch of money on different hair products). =)
Using more conditioner should prevent tangles as well.

conditioner might not be the problem or the solution -- you don't want to dry out or weigh down your hair in the process for finding less tangles! invest in a satin pillowcase, this will keep your hair smooth and shiny while you're tossing and turning at night. brush your hair right before you go to bed as well.

take care! happy 2007.

I have had hair below my waist for many years. After I shampoo and condition, I take a regular spray bottle and mix 1/2 water with 1/2 DOWNY... fabric softener and then spray on my hair while it is wet. NEVER brush or comb wet hair.... wait until it is almost dry ... just a little damp and then brush out...

Get it trimmed and then use a sulfate-free shampoo. I know Alterna, CHI and Pureology make them. Shampoos with sulfate damage the outter layer of the hair shaft and cause tangling.
