Like it or not, the alcohol in a drink does contribute to the taste. There isn't really any alcohol-free drink that really tastes the same as a drink containing alcohol - that goes for beers, wines, and cocktails. Your friend just needs to change his palate a little.
I've tried the alcohol free alternatives if I've been driving, and didn't find anything that was authentic. If I can't drink alcohol, I just stick to coffee instead.

Non-alcoholic Beers
Virgin Pina Coladas
Virgin Daquris.
I drink virgin pina coladas whenever my family goes out to dinner, because I'm pregnant, and can't drink the real things...sigh.

In the spice aisle of the grocery store, they sell little bottles of imitation rum flavoring. I use it to flavor a glass of Coca-Cola. It's not quite as good as the real thing but pretty close.

Maybe a virgin margarita? The salt on the rim of the glass may fool them. That's my favorite part.
