I am planning on purchasing the Weight Watchers At-Home kit (because I would HATE to go to meetings every week with my busy schedule). The standard kit costs $99.95. Do you think it's worth it? My friend has had great success with Weight Watchers and I hope that it will be as successful for me.

Don't get me wrong. I'm active. I play lacrosse and field hockey, but I am not happy with my body--at all. I'm not one of those obese people that sits on the couch all day eating chips. But my diet is pretty bad and I am not consistent with going to the gym in my off-season. Should I just learn some discipline with my diet and start dedicating myself to training for the lacrosse season...or should I spend the money and hope that I'm as successful as a lot of people have been on Weight Watchers?

i tried the online version a few years ago, but don't do well with regulations... it's not anywhere near as bad as other programmes, but there is 'homework' etc. (food diary, that kind of thing). I think that if you 'need discipline', no group can give it to you. If you're like me, you'll do well for a while, and then go back to your own habits.

the principles are sound though, i still have them in mind when i shop or eat out, and more or less keep to them.

some bits for free, if you want...

instead of thinking about foods you can't eat (a psychology of deprivation), make eating healthier foods something you want to do - think about adding, rather than subtracting.

find ten fruits and ten veggies you like. eat five of either a day; there'll be less room in your gut for junk. tick them off in your head if you're a goal-oriented person.

read about food. buy a cookbook, experiment with recipes - get creative, and make cooking and eating a pleasurable thing. i'm sure you already know lots, like brown carbs are better than white, etc. But if you can find a really good loaf of hot, whole grain bread, with a bit of yummy hummus, you'll know it experientially.

Healthy food does turn into tasty food sooner or later. i used to be able to plow through a huge bag of dorito's, no problem. now i swear i can notice the slimy trans-fat/msg aftertaste after a handful of chips (which I still eat when i'm in the mood, rare as it is - no deprivation!)

It sounds like it might be worth a try for you. I second the above recommendation for the online/etools version, if you're going to do it. I dug the message boards online. but the meetings were a total pain for me and a waste of money. (I was also the thinnest person there most times, which got me lots of dirty looks--I'm definitely overweight, but I was not as obese as the other folks there at the time) :) However, keep in mind that most of Weight Watchers is just common sense. It is about portion control, high/fiber-low fat, and water and that is it. If you already know that you are just plain eating too much, WW may or may not help you.

Personally I lost 15 pounds on WW, had to quit because I became entirely obsessed with points. It was all I thought about, all day, every day, to the point where it affected my job. I gained the weight back. You may not be as OCD as I was, but I have heard of other people having a similar problem.

No, it is not.

People say they had such great results on it, but honestly, people need to use logic here.

All our bodies are different. Yes, we have the same organs and they work in the same way, but we have different needs. We aren't all designed like a computer program. We don't all need 3 bananas a day, 8 glasses of water a day, 3 glasses of milk a day, NO. Yes, we do need water and veggies and fruit, and yes, we do all operate better when we eat healthy foods, but you can't expect to react the same way to the diet like your friend.

Don't bother spending your money. These simple tricks will help you slim down and feel better about yourself:

*Drink at least 8 glasses of cold water every day. Cold water actually uses up calories because your body can't use the water when it is too cold, so it uses energy to heat it up.

*Stop drinking soda and sugary juices all together, they do nothing but harm your body.

*Eat smaller meals, but more meals throughout the day. Never skip a meal, because you skip a meal, overeat at the next meal, feel bad, skip another meal, overeat again, ect. DOES NOT WORK!

*Veggies and fruits are your friends! Plus, eating pomigranite (the actual fruit) can curb your appetite, plus it will take you a full hour to pick out all that stuff in the actual fruit :)

*When you eat, be sure to sit up straight and have a little pillow on your lower back. This will help your brain realize it is full. It takes the brain 15-20 minutes to realize you are full!

*When you eat, take 3 bites, a sip of cold water, 3 bites, sip of cold water. This will help your brain realize it is full.

*Get smaller plates and smaller knives and forks. Why? Studies show that a group of people with big bowls and giant spoons will eat TONS of ice cream before full. While people who have little bowls and need to eat the ice cream with tiny sample spoons still eat that little bowl of ice cream, and they feel satisfied and full!

Good luck!

don't get it.

i drink coffee all day (to keep hunger away) and just eat whatever i want for dinner. sometimes i have a small snack.

there are no points or calorie counting, and it is free! i have lost 50 pounds in 3.5 months. save your money for something fun!

my doctor actually told me "if you don't put the food in your mouth, you will lose weight!"

good luck!!!
