Parents can often influence your decision a lot, especially if they support you financially. But ultimately, the decision should be your own (the student's), because at the end of the day, you are the one who will have to live with the consequences of your choices.

The career choice is definitely a decision that the young student has to make...the parents probably have various hopes and aspirations for their son/daughter, however ultimately the individual student is the one that should decide. The parents may help guide the student, help to show the student his/her strengths and weaknesses, explain what each career choice might involve. But in the end the young person must make the choice they are most comfortable with.

I say that parents can help influence your career choice, but in the end, the final decision is and should be made by the "student" or the person that is going to have to live with that career for the rest of his or her life.

Doing what your parents want you to do for a career isn't always a good thing. A lot of people would be very miserable if they just picked the career their parents told them to.

My chosen career has been greatly influenced by my upbringing (ie- parents), but my parents have made it very clear that they think I'm capable of great things, not just work in my chosen field.
