If there is an alternate pronunciation for traditional timbales and the type that is often affixed to a drumset, please tell me that.

Tim - bah - lees, with the accent on the "bah," is the correct pronunciation. I've been playing and teaching music for years (degrees in music education for both piano and band) and I've never heard it pronounced any other way, regardless of whether it is alone or affixed to a drumset.

Timbales Instrument

It's the same as the dessert dish! Americans usually pronounce it "TIM-b(e)ls" (rhymes with "cymbals"). To be fair, the word is from the French and not Spanish (I confess, I'm used to thinking of all percussion instruments as Latin). If you want to go get all French on your friends, pronounce it "tam-bahl" without stressing either syllable. Did you know that Merriam-Webster's online dictionary features audio pronounciations of most words? Very useful!
