I think it depends where you are. I can't comment on the US, but I recently bought a Cybershot DSC-H5 in Tokyo for about £70.00 less than the cheapest I could find it online in the UK. Some of that has to do with Tax-Free shopping, but it was still cheaper.

Sony, like most Japanese manufacturers, uses their domestic market to subsidize their North American business. Most camcorders sold in North America are being sold at or below the actual manufacturing cost. They do this to capture as much market share as they can and North America is a desirable market to own.
In order to keep the corporation's bottom line in the black, they then over-charge most of the Asian market to gain back their profits.
The exception is Hong Kong where there is so much black marketing going on that the prices are lower. The products, however, are questionable.
