Question about a American DVD players playing Foreign films?

I recently purchased the Japanese film Casshern from Amazon and when i played it on my dvd player, it started up with warnings of pirating and then went to a dolby surround clip but after that the disc froze before the menu would appear. Now i was wondering if that happened because the movie is from a different region but why would it start up? Im guessing the disc was falty but if a disc is from another region should it not start up at all?

Try itin a computer with multiregion capabilities. I think Win DVD has that. If it doesn't work send it back.
