Training my parakeet only took me about 2 weeks. Anyways, I suggest you get its favorite kind of treat or fruit/ vegetable and place it near the door of its cage. Then when he starts to munch on it. Move the treat inside the cage and near its door. Then when your parakeet hops in close the cage. Make sure to do this at least twice a day. Then maybe after a week or two your parakeet should hop inside its cage once you open it.
Now about finger training your parakeet. You only need a stick when you are barely teaching your parakeet how to hop onto your finger. Ok, you start by placing your index finger aginst your parakeet's chest, then give it a gentle push. This causes your parakeet to slightly loose its balance. Making it hop onto your finger. Afterwards get your other index finger and repeat the steps. After another week or two your parakeet should be happily finger trained. I hope this advice helps..

Make sure his cage is open and put him on the top of his cage. When he gets hungry, he will crawl around it looking for the opening. Parakeets are very territorial about their cages, so if you want him to go on your finger instead of a stick, approach him very very slowly, speaking in a comforting, quiet voice saying "come on my finger". Gently and slowly, bring your finger up to his belly towards his feet and apply the slightlest pressure. If he flies around his cage, back away and try later. He will learn to trust you, if he knows when you are putting your hand into his cage, you are not harming or grabbing him. It takes alot of patience, but they love human contact and attention. If a parakeet is left alone, without anyone talking to him, he will get distant and bite.

My parakeet learned to go back into his cage after play time when I made it part of the routine for him to go back and eat some fresh veggie or other treat, then take a nice warm bath in the bottom of his cage.

you can put it in it's cage and feed it a snack when he goes back. Remember when he does his trick all by himself you need to give him a big reward!

leave the door open and put food in there. Don't feed it outside the cage.
