Long ago, people used to marry if they were 8th cousins and on. So considerably, is it bad to date your 3rd cousin? Post your opinions please.

the idea of marrying cousins varies between cultures and even within families. if it's a 3rd cousin by blood then it might be weird, but if it's a 3rd cousin and the relation is only through marriage then i don't see what the big deal is. if it's blood then i guess the people involved would have to think long and hard about possible genetic defects that their children might have. for health reasons, marrying close blood relatives is not advocated because it narrows the gene pool, increasing the chance of having children with physical defects. (i'm assuming everyone's gotten past the whole "marrying a relative" psychological aspect.)

i guess it all just depends.

No. Even first cousins can marry (date, whatever) in some states, but not in most. But outside of first cousins, it's all up for grabs. Eleanor and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were fifth cousins once removed.

Anyway, read this. I really don't think it's at all bad bad, but you should realize what kind of opposition you might be up against.

I'd draw the line at dating sisters/brothers, but shucks, from second cousins on up ..... go for it. Only the prudes and religious bigots will be upset.

Heck, the pharaohs of ancient Egypt married their own sisters.

And, by the way, you did say DATING, didn't you? I don't recall you saying anything about breeding.

Love!

You aren't allowed by law to date cousins, because sometimes, if you're married to your cousin, your children are mentally challenged(retarded, not just saying to be mean, retarded by definition)or observed. But you're barely related to third cousins by blood, so I don't think it's a problem. Unless because of your family, but by law, I think it's legal.

There is no problem dating your 3rd cousin if you don't mind it if your second cousin gets jealous!

personally I think if you are close as in someone you see often it would be weird cause Im sure you refer to them as a cousin not 3rd cousin but if its one whom you dont know well but are attracted to I think that would be different

3rd cousins are so far removed, you barely share the same DNA. Have no fear, it's even legal in the United States...so, you KNOW it's not the least bit kinky or weird!
