I have a 9 week old German Shepherd puppy....he is getting the hang of housetraining. I noticed even after he pees outside.....if their is carpet he will pee a tad bit...I have a female toy poodle mix....could he be marking his territory although the other one was here first. The Vet said their was nothing wrong with him.....Thanks

That is probably what he is doing marking but you need to teach him not to do it or the house will start to smell very bad

He is covering the scent of the other dog by urinating on the carpet where he is picking up the other dogs scent. Let them both outside at the same time and you will see that the Shepherd will go behind where the poodle pees and urinate in the same spot in order to cover the other dogs scent. It's a Territorial behavior. More than likely when he does it on the carpet it's because he is picking up scent where the poodle has peed on the carpet in the past and is attempting to establish territorial dominance. Yes even though he is only 9 weeks old he will start to do this. Always try to let them outside at the same time to do their business. This will help to teach them that outside is the place to do this. This is something that dogs do instinctively and is probably something that you will not be able to stop. Some people believe that neutering a dog will stop this from occurring.
It doesn't. It only slows it down some. Especially with German Shepherds because they can be a very dominant natured dogs. I have 2 full grown ones myself that are not neutered and they both do this constantly. But never in the house. Only outside. The reason neither one of them are neutered is because police dogs are better to be in tact because to neuter them can slow down their drives which make them a less motivated dog for that kind of work.

even though shepherds (and thank you for spelling it right :) are the best dogs ever! any 9 week old pup is going to have several accidents, all you can do is catch him when he's piddling and immediatly move him outside and wait until he finishes out there then praise him. maybe even wait for him to go twice outside, sometimes they don't finish the first try outdoors. but at 9 weeks accidents are still very very normal. just keep up the good work!

Walk him around for about 5 minutes after he pees. He is not emptying his bladder all the way. A little walk and some extra time and he should get the hang of it.

He just hasn't finished going all the way when he was outside. He is too young to be marking his territory. I hope that you will get him neutered however otherwise he will mark his territory.

He is probably just trying to put his scent there or marking it as his. Especially if there is another dog. My dog used to do that kind of thing before he was fixed...if he smelled were another dog had been then he would pee on it to make it "his".

Maybe he isn't outside long enough and hasn't finished? He also could be too excited and be leaking because of that. If that's the case he should grow out of it.
