Yes, unless your really brave or its just a little bit he can scratch off. Usually the Dentist will give you a small shot of Novacane in your gum around the tooth that needs the filling, it doesn't hurt and you wont feel a thing, just relax, its cool nowadays. Just smells funny thats all. The Dentisits today are so good you wont feel a thing. Chill..

I'm a dentist.

Anesthesia comes in three forms: local, regional, and general.

For the vast majority of a dentist's work, local anesthesia is sufficient. I cannot think of any situations where a patient would be given regional anesthesia. General anesthesia (nitrous oxide qualifies, but does not "put you under".) can be given for various procedures, but typically oral and maxillofacial surgeons provide this service. It is an extreme rarity to find a general dentist who does it, although there certainly are some who do.

For the majority of fillings, most doctors will give you an injection of local anesthetic. Sometimes, however, if a cavity is small enough, anesthetic is not necessary and most patients are perfectly happy to try the procedure without the injection.

It may not be gas, if thats what you are thinking of, but the dentist will definitely give you some type of pain reliever. Most likely a shot in your gums, I would think. That's what I got, and I couldn't feel a thing.

most dentists prefer to give you anesthetic for a filling - it can be painful (drilling) and with the freezing most people don't feel anything - the last thing they need is you "jumping" from the sensitivity...don't worry - a filling isn't too big a deal - big or small...
