My friend told me about running with a garbage bag on under your clothes is supposed to make you sweat like crazy and drop weight. Has anyone tried this? I'm afraid to dehydrate or something!

Garbage Bag Running

I'm an amateur triathlete, having completed a half-ironman at one point. That's a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13 mile run.
What you are suggesting is absolutely dangerous and insane. Your body has to be able to sweat and cool. You could easily die pulling that stunt.
You are much better off with eating a balanced diet and getting a healthy amount of cardiovascular workout 3 or more times a week. Start slow, maybe with 5 minutes of cardio workout a few times a week and then work up to as much as 30 - 60 minutes of cardio a week.
Your friend doesn't have a clue. No longer take exercise advice from this person.

I do actually run with garbage bags sometimes- when i have to take out the trash and its freezing or raining outside.

But when I actually run run I like to take 1 pound weights in each hand. That way its less embarrassing than running with a garbage bag- who needs neighbors laughing at you anyways? Maybe I should start running with my girlfriend on my shoulders.

He's covering up the fact that he's hurt over losing you and probably regrets making the mistakes he did to cause the break-up. I know it hurts to lose a friend but it sounds like if you keep texting and staying in contact he's only going to keep hurting you. Don't get caught up in that trap. Also, it's pretty immature for him to go around gossipping to everyone trying to make you look bad. Don't listen to gossip. The best way to get over this whole ordeal is to get on with your life and you don't need a boyfriend to do that. Also, as a side note, the most common mistake men/boys make is to get another girlfriend immediatly after they break up with another. By doing this it gives no time to heal and he'll probably screw this new gf up as well. Give yourself space and time and before you know it you'll hardly remember why you liked him in the first place.

You lose water weight only, and you can become dangerously dehydrated and lose more electrolytes in the process which could affect negatively your whole system in the process. We used to do that in Football in the '70s as we had a weight classification, but it was stopped due to the fact that the players would become very fatigued during the game, and I believe someone had a stroke that was attributed to this practise. Bottom line, you will gain back the weight as soon as you rehydrate.

Sweating doesn't equal weight loss. You will only lose water weight, plus it's dangerous since you can dehydrate to the point of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

you will only lose water weight and as soon as you drink something it the weight will come back, but you also risk heat exhaustion, it's not a real smart thing to do

That's only water weight...its not permanent and can be damaging. Some athletes do this to loose weight just before a weigh in...but the weight comes back on when you have a glass of water.

I'm a nurse. I have never heard of that. I would however wear layers of clothing and you can sweat a great deal that way. Make sure you drink plenty of cold water, that also burns fat. It couldn't hurt to try it, it might just work. Make sure you eat right and exercise. You know any form of movement is exercise. Even dancing to your favorite song on the radio, try that I did.

People who do that think it is permanent are dumb as hell. The only reason to do that is to lose water weight. I used to do that to make weight for a fight. It makes you feel like crap, and as soon as you eat or drink, guess what? The weight is back.
