I am taking a trip to Mexico very soon by car. However, I will be flying back into the United States. What do I need to bring with me? I have no passport, but of course I have my SS Card and birth certificate, should I bring these along?

Norman, I don't know who you are and honestly do not care. I am not Mexican and even if I was, what's the problem?

You probably NEED a passport.
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
Also, if you're bringing anything back with you that you didn't take into Mexico, you'll need a customs form.

When my husband and I honeymooned in Cancun, we had to have our birth certificates and drivers licenses (or some form of picture ID). The birth certificate could NOT be a photo copy, but a copy actually obtained from the county hall in which we were born (had to have the "raised" seal). However, I have heard that soon you will be required to have a passport, but I'm not sure how true this is. And if it is true, I'm not sure when.
*Norman* Why make the statement a racist issue? Why does there always need to be one person turing everyone's remarks into a racist comment? Go away, Norman. And come back when you are mature enough to answer a question like an adult.

You need your certified birth certificate and a picture I.D. The new passport regulation is effective January23. Starting then you must have a passport. It would not hurt to have it before then. If you are returning after January 23, you need to apply tomorrow for an expedited passport. You can go to travel.state.gov to read the regulations for yourself. You can also call your airline to see what they require.
