Make it worth it. Keep food and transportation costs in mind.

how far do they live? will they be living in your home during this time? would they be able to take the birds an dog to there home an check up on your home 3 5 times a week to bring in mail ec.
most boarding take dogs for 25 dollars a day an that is just feeding them an walking birds at a care center here in town charges 10-25 per bird ( price ranges on size and how much interaction you want bird an person to have) so when 30 days are up you would be 1550.00 just on pets if you were to kennel them but you say they will be in your home using electric ec i would at least offer 10.00-30.00 a day. i know that is what i got for a neighbor when he went away for sitting 2 dogs an a horse was 25.00 a day. an i didn't stay at his home also you may be doing them a favor for letting them stay rent free in your home before you leave talk about a payment play if they do not want anything when u come back bring back a trinket an a gift card for food or restaurant an a cashier check and a nice hand written note of thanks when u return an if u are wondering how much spend 25 on a gift from the trip 50 on a restaurant gift card or food store an i would do 200 on a check make sure its cashiers cus then they would have to cash it an not hold a personal check from you

I think it's a good idea to provide some sort of compensation, especially because they are taking care of pets as well as making the place look lived-in. Do they already have a place to live or is it also convenient for them to stay in your house? Are they going to be providing their own food? I'd say just talk to the person up front about it and agree on something specific. Then whatever you decide between yourselves will be fine.

Is it a treat for them to stay in your house one month rent free? There are times in my life where that would have been the case and just having a place to myself would have been enough, but now it would be a burden because I have my own place and pets to think about. So what is there situation and decide from there.

That would really depend on your relationship before this. I would give them something. If they don't want cash (some folks are insulted) a gift card or taking them out to dinner, etc is good. Make sure there's lots of everything they need in the house.

Never take advantage of a friend - you could lose them, and family members are too important to abuse. Remember - if you would pay a stranger than friends and family deserve it as well. Offer them a reasonable amount based on what researched strangers require and be thankful that you can trust them and know them better than the stranger!!

I would definately give them something. If all they are doing is just staying in there, not as much. If they are taking care of pets, then a little more. Do you have them doing any work like shoveling, cleaning or gardening of any kind? Moving furniture? Shopping? Take this all in to account.

depends on a lot of factors i think....
is it a young person? if it's a young person who lives at home with mom and dad, then living on their own for a month would be a bit of a reward in itself!...however i would still pay them.....
i kind of see it like this:
how much would kenneling your dog for a month cost? (where i live it's about $10 a day...which would be $300 a month)
how much would it cost to have some security features added for the month to prevent burglars?
.......even if you only pay the person $300 you are still getting a good deal.....
and i would make sure the fridge and freezer are fully stocked.....
make sure you pay this person well......you are entrusting them with your home and beloved pets.....
have a nice trip!
