well patches don,t work for me,gum don,t work either...the only real way to quit is just do it and suffer though it....i have quit 2 times in my life, once for 10 years and once for 4 years and each time started back....Both times I quit it was cold turkey, and I suffered for a couple of weeks and then broke the habit, both times i started back when I got upset or stressed....You just have to make up your mind to quit and just do it....you suffer a couple of weeks and then you can get ok .

Actually wanting to quit smoking (more than you want to smoke). Works for drinking too. Theres oh I'm quitting/cutting down puff puff puff, or oh I'll just have a few more/finish this pack. Or you can bit the bullet and stop doing it, something that helps to remember is that the drugs gone from your system in 3 days, and after a week your bodies basically recovered from the physical addiction. You will still get cravings but as time goes on they become less. Also if you lapse and have a cigarette, just keep trying if it's a pack chuck it out again, throw out the cigarette don't finish it. edit: oh yeah if that is too hard, you could change your addiction to the gum or the patches, and stop damaging your lungs.

Step one is to figure out why you smoke.
One reason is that you need something in your mouth, as the doctors would say (seriously), which is less about the nicotine. In this case, nicotine gum would be best. If it's really the nicotine that you're hooked on, then the nicotine patch (e.g., Nicoderm) is the solution.
For those with strong will, the most economical method is "cold turkey". It works for some, but not all. For most, it takes up to six tries to quit for good.
The key is that you *want* to quit and are ready to take action to stop. It helps if you adjust your social surroundings too: "quit with others" = family members and friends should quit too, while you're trying to quit. People who offer you cigs or invite you out to smoke will contribute to failure of smoking cessation efforts.
Good luck.

i agree-- Cold Turkey is the only way. I smoked for 25 years, tried every quit smoking aid there is. One day I just stopped. I was sick of being sick and smelly and standing in the rain to get my fix. when you really want to quit, you will.
Good Luck and don't give up trying.

This is what worked for me. Look at what sort of cigarette you smoke, and switch to something the exact oppisite. If you smoke reds, switch to misty menthol ultra lights. If you smoke lights, switch to reds. Or get vanilla or peppermint flavored cigs from a smoke shop. Just pick something that you completely hate. Only allow yourself to smoke those. Over time, you'll grow to hate smoking those disgusting cigarettes, and you'll only do it when you REALLY want one. Then it'll be one a day, then none at all. It just takes the pleasure out of smoking, leaving only the physical effects to deal with.
Oh- I switched to menthols, and I found that chewing a couple of cough drops when I craved helped stem the craving once I got used to those disgusting minty things.
Good luck!

The only thing that worked for me was quitting cold turkey. Other methods may work for some people, but cold turkey is the most successful method.

When I quit smoking back in 1993, I just laid down a pack of cigarettes and vowed to never pick up another pack of cigarettes again................my word means everything to me, without it I cannot even trust myself.
P.S. I haven't picked up a pact of cigarettes since.

Cold turkey...stop smoking and hanging with people that do. Keep away from your triggers...bars, coffee shops, etc. It takes time..take it a day at a time.
