Germany declared war on the US on December 11, 1941. This followed the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941 and our Declaration of War on Japan. The following came from http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/timeline/germany-declares.htm and helps to explain why Germany ddeclared war on the US.

"German Declaration of War against the U.S.

The Government of the United States having violated in the most flagrant manner and in ever-increasing measure all rules of neutrality in favor of the adversaries of Germany and having continually been guilty of the most severe provocations toward Germany ever since the outbreak of the European war, provoked by the British declaration of war against Germany on September 3, 1939, has finally resorted to open military acts of aggression.

On September 11, 1941, the President of the United States publicly declared that he had ordered the American Navy and Air Force to shoot on sight at any German war vessel. In his speech of October 27, 1941, he once more expressly affirmed that this order was in force. Acting under this order, vessels of the American Navy, since early September 1941, have systematically attacked German naval forces. Thus, American destroyers, as for instance the Greer, the Kearny and the Reuben James, have opened fire on German submarines according to plan. The Secretary of the American Navy, Mr. Knox, himself confirmed that American destroyers attacked German submarines.

Furthermore, the naval forces of the United States, under order of their Government and contrary to international law have treated and seized German merchant vessels on the high seas as enemy ships.

The German Government therefore establishes the following facts:

Although Germany on her part has strictly adhered to the rules of international law in her relations with the United States during every period of the present war, the Government of the United States from initial violations of neutrality has finally proceeded to open acts of war against Germany. The Government of the United States has thereby virtually created a state of war.

The German Government, consequently, discontinues diplomatic relations with the United States of America and declares that under these circumstances brought about by President Roosevelt, Germany too, as from today, considers herself as being in a state of war with the United States of America.

Accept, Mr. Chargé d'Affaires, the expression of my high consideration.

December 11, 1941"

Yes. Hitler did declare war against the USA on Dec. 11, 1941. Actually, both Germany and Italy declared war on the USA on that day. This is in support of Japan after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.

I see you got a lot of people that know squat about History. Hitler declared war on the USA after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the USA declared war on Japan. They had an agreement and he was forced to honor it. Fact was, he knew that dragging the USA into the war was a bad deal and supposed cursed like a sailor for 2 days over it.

Hmm. Judge for yourselves:

Hitler's declaration of war against the United States on December 11, 1941 four days after the Empire of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, USA set him against a coalition that included the world's largest empire (the British Empire), the world's greatest industrial and financial power (the USA), and the world's largest army (the Soviet Union).

*******

At the same time Japan, with which Germany had a nonaggression pact, attacked Pearl Harbor, and Hitler declared war on the United States.

He underestimated the United States and his alliance with Japan made it a political necessity for Japan's continued cooperation. He also overestimated the capabilities of Vichy France which had a pathetic army incapable of defending against an army 1,000 miles away from supply attempting an amphibious landing. He was right to underestimate the US. First off, the US was thousands of miles away and across an ocean with no real viable way to get onto Europe or Africa. Vichy France's weakness allowed America to land and secure a beachhead. Second, the US's greatest strength has been logistics and supply for the past century. When he declared war on the US, Germany had no problems with supply lines and its army was vastly more advanced, powerful, and well trained. The American army was a rabble of conscripts (in comparison, of course) until after the Germans were pushed out of Africa.

Americans heard Hitler declare war on December 11,1941, broadcast across the Atlantic from Berlin via short wave.

Adolf Hitler made his announcement at the Reichstag in Berlin saying he had tried to avoid direct conflict with the US but, under the Tripartite Agreement signed on 27 September 1940, Germany was obliged to join with Italy to defend its ally Japan.

December 11 1941: Germany and Italy declare war on US
Germany and Italy have announced they are at war with the United States. America immediately responded by declaring war on the two Axis powers.
Three days ago, US President Franklin Roosevelt announced America was at war with Japan, the third Axis power, following the surprise attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor.

Hitler declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941 four days after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Maybe he was going for broke after he violated the non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union.

Some say he only did it cause he did not respect us as a power ,I can see that too.

Because he was allied with Japan and Italy. FDR wanted desperately to get into WW2. He put an oil embargo against Japan (which is an act of war). When Japanese radio intercepts indicated that Japan was about to attack Pearl Harbor, FDR failed to warn Pearl, because he thought that if the Japanese realized that they had lost the element of surprise, they would have turned back.
