The food, but mostly I think the expansion happens because of the increase in water. Overnight, your body uses up its store of water so over the course of the day, it builds up that store again (which is a good thing because you need the water). Then it uses that water at night to help your body function well.

Just make sure you always take your measurement at the same time each day and you'll be fine. Same thing with weighing yourself. Your weight can fluctuate quite a bit during the day as well, for the same reasons.

That is very natural. Most people are that way. A person's weight can shift 1 or 2 lbs to 5 or more lbs depending on how much a person eats throughout the day and how much water they drink and retain.

You're more likely to retain or collect gasses or fluids in your body during the day. Or you release or use up gasses and fluids during the night.

when you are horizonal for 8 hours...gravity dictates that the fluids will distribute themselves more evenly throughout your body. did you ever notice that your eyes or face are more puffy in the morning,and your feet are more puffy at night? gravity my friend.

That is normal, your stomach expands during the day when you eat and then contracts again at night when you are asleep. HTH : )
