The problems isn't coffee---its the brand. Starbucks coffee does taste bitter (especially to a non-coffee drinker) because it is extremely dark roasted. In fact, Starbucks over roasts their coffees, to the point that the natural taste profiles of the beans origins are covered up with that burnt, bitter taste... Try another brand--go with gourmet brands because supermarket brands can taste horrible, even without the bitterness....Try Barnies, Gloria Jeans, or a LOCAL coffee shop that you can ask questions and they can help you pick out what you will like...

The more bolder it is, the more bitter. In other words, the darker the bean, the more it was roasted, hence the more bitter. You should look for a more mild coffee bean if you like it black but not to bitter. Or try some half and half or sugar. Starbucks uses very bold coffee so that's why their coffee is so bitter. Bitter does not of course equal better.

Starbucks coffee is nasty. I don't know if it's the blend they use, or they way they roast it, but I find it tastes sour and bitter.
Good coffee tastes somewhat bitter but smooth, and has no sour undertones.
People put sugar and creamer to reduce the bitterness of nasty coffee, but I think it only makes it more disgusting. Just get good coffee.

I can't drink Starbucks. It wires me all day. I do think it is very bitter. I do like a nice decaf with milk or should I say I like milk with a little decaf. In other words heavy on the milk. I do drink it blended meaning a 2% or lowfat milk. I also like the vanilla decaf. So, yes, people like flavors, but you don't have to drink it fattening. Coffee is nice. It's a little perk. Some people drink it. Some don't. It's kinda like wine in that respect. Some people know wine and drink it. Others go with a box and can't tell a rose from a port or Italian from American. As far as Coffees go, Jamaican coffee is very nice. Arabic is very stout (too strong). That's why they drink theirs in little cups.

Although coffee is a little bitter due to the acid content, it should not be overly so. If your coffee is bitter, maybe you have either brewed it too long, or did not remove the filter fast enough. With both tea and coffee, if you brew it too long, the natural oils called tannins are released into the drink which results in the bitter taste.

I love Starbucks.....my advise to you is to ask the Barista at the counter if he or she can recommend a coffee to you that they serve that is less bitter or not bitter at all. I personally love their Iced Mochas and Caramel Apple Ciders but they have a huge selection of coffees and other drinks too.
My experience with Starbucks is that their employees are friendlier and more knowledgable than many other restaurants or coffee houses can be. That is one of the reasons they can get away with the prices of their products.....People love the service they get!
Good Luck and don't hesitate to ask for help there.

I am a coffee connoisseur, and there are many coffees that are smooth.
The amount of coffee you are adding to your maker will definitely provide different tastes. Try lesser amounts.
Suggest Starbucks Sumatra....but use less when brewing...It provides a rich, but smooth taste....
You might also want to add some Hazelnut or Vanilla (fat free) creamer.

There are many blends of coffee that are not bitter, Starbucks is one of the more bitter blends. Look for samething labled mild, breakfast blend or smooth blend. It will have less acid, so it will be less bitter. Lots of sugar and cream help too!!
