Offer them tutoring solutions. Find online resources or computer software that helps. Offer to study with them, if its a subject you do well in. Don't worry about comfort. That is not what your friend needs. Give them the tools to make it happen.

It is important that they not compare themselves to others, but rate their own learning. As a professor, I tried to stress this with students. I also frequently told students that I knew that they absorbed more knowledge than their grades reflected; they merely did not take tests well/write research papers well. I also told them how I worked so hard for grades for all those years of college, only to never have anyone ask or care what my GPA was. The goal for them should be to learn the material and get the diploma and know in their heart they learned something.

I hope these suggestions help. I have a dear friend with whom I have been friends for 20 years. Our only argument in that entire time was over grades in college - we studied together and I got A's while she didn't. She really had a hard time accepting that. I never knew what to say to her and never rubbed it in. Having that friendship and argument made me a much more sensitive professor, I think.

I am assuming something different from the previous post - that this person really does study, but is disappointed in their grades. I have seen students knock themselves out with tutors and computer quizzes and flash cards, only to get the same result because they don't take tests well. I think it is important to encourage them to stick with it and know that they know the material, regardless of the grade.

"Look, you're working hard and that's what matters. Who cares what your grades are? You have people who care about you and respect you. You have a million other talents. Einstein sucked in school, so did Thomas Edison. So did Picasso. It's not the end of the world."

Mostly just be there for them.

Well if they are studying and making an effort. They may want to consider a tutor or take some testing to see if they have a learning disability. God bless****

Possibly they don't want you to offer any solutions, maybe they just want to be heard. You can just say something like, "I'm so sorry you're frustrated."
