My friend owns a chihuahua and last week noticed a lump over her right shoulder that isn't painful, but wasn't there before the dog was given to her. Prior to my friend getting the dog, the dog had received her shots. Some thought was swelling around the injection site, but haven't heard of giving a dog a shot over their shoulder. Can anyone shed some light on this or provide a website that we can check out?

It could be a reaction from shots, especially the rabies. One of my dogs got a rabies shot on his shoulder, and he had a dime size knot on his shoulder for over 3 weeks. Where the vets place the shot depends on personal preference and the directions of the shots (some just go under the skin, and some go into the muscle).

It does sound like a reaction to the shot. They will sometimes get a lump there, it usually goes away after a few days. The shots are given between the shoulder blades where the skin is loose. Sounds like they just did it a little off to the right.

Yes, shots are given in the shoulder. Tell her to apply an ice bag to the lump several times a day for a couple of days. If it doesn't go down, acts differently or she is worried call the vet to check it.

It is possible that it could be a injection site reaction and over the shoulder around the scruff area is where they usually get injections.
Since it is a chihuahua and they are more delicate than other dogs, she should have a vet look at it to make sure that it isn't something to be more concerned about.

Vaccinations are given in the shoulder area so the lump is probably from the vaccination

Call the vet who gave the shots. (s)he will tell you if you should bring the dog in. A good vet will always appreciate this kind of phone call. Little dogs can die real fast, so if I were you, I would phone the vet.

Yes, commonly the distemper combo vaccine is given at that location.
