You are talking 2 different eras of NASCAR.
Petty was from the old era. This was the time that the driver did more than just drive the car,he'd have his hands in the building of the car ,the management of the team and even driving the transport vehicle. This was the time that NASCAR still run the 1/4 or 1/2 mile tracks. The teams may have run 2 or 3 events a week.
Earnhardt was the first of the modern era drivers.Yes he had his hand in running the team and had input as to building the car but it usually stopped there.NASCAR had dropped most of the short tracks so the events were on Saturday or Sunday and not during the week nights.
So yes the both were the greatest of their eras.In todays eras there are several good drivers coming up and coming drivers who in the next few years can be put up there with these 2,Gordon,Stewart,Busch,Kenseth are some, then Rusty,Martin,Marlin are close to that level but not quite at that level.
Then some that passed on we shall not know about,Allison,Kulwicki,Adam Petty,Richmon. And we have the retired that just drove as much as they could,Pearson,Allison.
So again yes Petty and Earnhardt senior are the best of the best.

Btwn Petty and Dale Sr , Dale Sr. He was the best without a doubt. As for a driver now, I would have to say Tony Stewart and Dale Sr are on the same level. Neither one took any crap off anyone, both of them are/were known for their intimidating attitudes both on and off the track. Both Stewart and Earnhardt Sr are/were able to drive any type of vehicle anywhere anytime.
They also are/were very giving of their time and money to charities and didn't hog the spotlight like alot of drivers do today. Tony Stewart is one of the most generous drivers on the circuit today with over 2 million going to victory junction gang alone in the last 5 years

Jr is not the greatest driver, however he is a good driver. For all the Jr haters out there, is has always been a top 15 driver regardless of where he was signed to drive. He is currently in the champoionship hunt and that is without a win, so he is doing it on consistancy. Jr is one of the most popular drivers and many non-fans would say it is because of his daddy. There may be a little truth to that at the beginning, but more importantly Jr. says it like it is. He is just like his dad when he says when he screwed up, when other screwed up and even gets excited for top 10 runs. Basically in this politically correct world he is down to earth. He never asked to be the most popular driver but he is and he is for a reason. Been a decade since Sr died and if he wasnt likable on his own then Sr fans would have left him by now.
