It is illegal to distribute music (or any other copyrighted work) to others who have not bought a copy or license in which to listen to the music. Most people think that as long as you don't sell it, it's legal, but they're wrong. Many people disregard the law knowing they will likely not get caught (and they're likely right), but God always knows.... Go to the source link below to learn more.

If you copied the music and gave it out, yes, it's illegal. You're providing people with free copies of something they could have bought and paid royalties for themselves. If you are going to pay for the rights to the songs you include on the CD, that's fine, but I suspect that would be so expensive that it would prohibit your wanting to use that as a favor.

A friend of mine gave out little boxes of salt water taffy as favors.
At a recent wedding reception I went to, we were given a data CD with photographs from after the wedding ceremony.

In fact, I don't think people would be upset if you didn't give away any favor at all.

I'm not quite sure, but giving a free copy of a mixed tape of music you already own is not illegal, so I would suppose that as long as you have bought the music, as opposed to downloading illegally, then it would probably be legal.

CD's? They aren't illegal to give as long as they are not bootleg.
What type of CD's would you give?
A good party favor would be a type of knicknack with your names and wedding date on them.
A wedding I went to once gave the guests, salt and pepper shakers with their names and wedding date on them.
There are also single wine glasses out there that you get personailzed to.

I am the maid of honor in my bf's wedding and I am making a slideshow to music with pictures from her and her fiancee's lives all through the year. Pictures of their families, friends, and of them when they were little and after they were a couple. I am making custom labels and covers to go with the wedding theme and making copies for each guest. It is an easy and great idea and my friend loved it.

i don't know about the legalities,
but we thought about doing it and realized how much work it would be and just never finished.
my brother had them done
we have yet to listen to their wedding album,
the love songs of a couple is just between them, i'm not sure if anyone really cares, ya know?
keep it simple--give a candle, or candy, or a picture, or a plant, or a bottle of wine with your picture on it. that would be way cooler i think, who owns cds anymore anyway--
are you willing to giveaway ipods, and can i come?

good luck

Who cares if it's illegal. You're giving them out to your friends and family . . .they're not going to turn you in. Besides, it's probably perfectly legal and even if it isn't most people download music and make cd's anyway.

Should be mixed CD's, not a complete copy. Mixed CD's aren't illegal.
