If you are self funding being a commercial pilot, look at putting aside around £70,000, buy Pilot and Flight International magazines as often as possible. Contact
www.airleague.co.uk
as they are offering people under 25 the first step of 14 FREE hours towards a PPL. As long as you have A-levels A-C in science subjects, then contact CTC aviation (apply via website) they offer a frozen ATPL and can get you with an airline in a few years as long as the airline wants you and pay the loan back when you're employed. You need to do this ASAP!

But, being serious, if you have only just thought about being a pilot, forget it, because the people on these courses have lived and dreamed of being pilots all their lives. You need to be this dedicated to stand any chance of success

I became a pilot on Aug 14th 2005, right after I graduated highschool. It don't take much, just a little money and some dedication.
However, to become a commerical pilot and fly buses, ya need to get your private pilot license and your commercial license. You should also get your instrument license aswell. Also get your multiengine license, on top that, get as many Pilot in command hours. Get hired, and enjoy. Sounds EZ enough, well, make sure you have good health and plenty of time to do all of the above.

Call Embry Riddle and ask them, they may be able to explain it better.

Best of luck!!!!

My brother is a captain in an airline. The first thing he did when he was young was do an intensive three month aviation course. He aced that, and he and his brother inlaw bought a small cessna between them to practice on. Getting the hours up was the hardest part, that was why they did this. They did a fair bit of topdressing around the area for the local farmers and started to practice acrobatics. With more hours up he joined the local areo club and started to teach. result, more experience, hours starting to escalate. He taught there for a few years, then became in charge out there as chief trainer.

Thats where he stood when he applied to the major airlines. Probably about 5 years experience, a Distinction in aviation studies, probably more exams along the way I don't know about, and about 2000 hours up.

He became a Captain in about another 5 years, and now a jetliner pilot trainer.

Good general health and fitness, and a huge wad of cash to pay for all the instruction and exams. Seriously, the absolute bare minimum for a private pilot's licence is 45hrs, and you're looking at £100+ per hour. If you want to make a career out of flying, kiss your wallet goodbye...
