Take up the water and food bowls at 8 pm the night before the surgery. The dog should have a completely empty stomach for the morning procedure.

I agree...fasting is usually 12 hours. It is for the benefit of YOUR pet. It makes the spay harder when the abdomen is huge with food bloated intestines, and both spays and neuters can vomit and aspirate food into their lungs....which can lead to pneumonia and DEATH!!
So follow the rules!!!!!
Most vets allow water.

As late as possible! Because if you are taking your dog to go to surgery in the morning anytime feed him late but not to late so he doesn't get hungry. And then once he gets back feed him again so hes not hungry.
